IVe got over 3 years in with a local ltl company, Ive been on the road for about 5 months now but this ltl just isnt for me :biggrin_25513:. Applied at SNI and talked with the recruiter and all. Took the drug and hair test yesterday. Supposed to be going to orientation oct 30th. Just a few questions. Im going to go to orientation on my vacation from my current job, I have heard that at some companies that they require you to call your employer (if they dont have verification that you have quit) and quit right there on the phone on the last day of orientation. Is this something SNI practices? I just want to make sure I am in the drivers seat before pulling the plug on my current job. The recruiter says that orientation will last sunday - thurs and friday I should be leaving out with a truck and trailer. Im relatively young, have no wife or kids and have always wanted to go OTR for atleast a few years. Im a little nervous I will admit about leaving my current job, but as unhappy as I am I shouldnt be. Ive never not had a job and the thought of quitting and something going wrong with SNI kind of worries me. Ive heard good things about SNI and will hopefully start my own story within a few weeks.

you should be nervous, leaving a ltl job for otr is not a popular decision. i've been trying to get on with southeastern for years, where you work now you get paid for all your time on the job,it's not that way with otr.you could retire from southeastern stay where your at.

Well I'm not sure about SNI but at Swift, they won't even let you into orientation unless you have quit your other job.. maybe you should have given a 2 week notice and leave on good terms so if things go sour with SNI you might be re hired.. I dunno if this is possible for you.

The money is good, the bennies are as well, 401k is matched dollar for dollar. I worked the dock and drove the yard truck for 3 years then wanted to drive (already had CDL-A). I come in around 930 every morning (I have a 1 hour drive each way). Run a left over route, and start making pickups. The dispatcher is constantly on my nextel wondering when can I get here, when can I get there, etc etc. 50% of the places I go were never intended for a tractor trailer and theres great risk for an accident or an incident, especially since SEFL insists on running 53's Everywhere. Blindside backing off the street has become a daily practice, trying to deliver to peoples houses with a tandem axle and a 53' really isnt a good idea but its pretty common, unloading freight by hand IN the street sometimes. Then after a very stressful day I get back to the yard and they want me to work the dock for a few more hours. I have always wanted to go OTR, used to ride with my pops as a kid and loved it. I obsviously know its going to be alot different driving than riding but Ive made up my mind.

Its a little late for the notice, as Ive only really got 1 week left to go. I wanted to make sure I was going to be ok over at SNI before I quit.

I know everyone says LTL is great because your home everyday. What good is being at home if all you have time to do is take a shower and go to bed and get back up and drive another hour back to work? I may regret it later on, looking for something a little more adventurous. LTL may be great for others, but in my current situation I am miserable.

I was with Schneider for 6 months and will be going back in the spring after family health issue is taken care of.The Charlotte terminal is a good place to recieve orientation. The schneider employees are honest and fair and it was a good experience, they really want you to succeed.I was on the 2 weeks on 1 week off otr program. When I go back I will be on the 1 week on 1 week off otr. They have so many hometime options available it really helps.I also really liked having the Schneider terminals all over the country and would stay at them whenever could. Most of them have a lot of parking and clean showers and cafeterias and free laundry machines.Otr with any company is tough but they are the largest and allways kept me moving.

RockyRiver ... How much time will you have been off when you decide to go back ? I have 2 1/2 years exp and was told they might want me to go back to school. (been off for 1 year for health reasons) I'd like to get on the 7on 7off program.

As far as your question, The only thing now that will get you kicked out of orientation will be failing their tests which aren't hard if you pay attention. you've passed the drug and physical so no worries there. also they have a work assessment which they do onsite it's sort of lift and squat type test duck under a table thing not hard if your in ok shape. And of course the driving test. But if your on your way on the only thing that will affect you is your performance. I/ve never heard of schneider asking you to call and quit but they may. also good luck and welcome to the Pumpkin.

Sal,I will have been away 8 months when I go back and I will have to take a refresher course at a Schneider approved cdl school.I understand that the cost will be reimbursed to me on a monthly basis by Schneider.Go to www.schneiderjobs.com and click on company drivers then click search and apply for jobs and click on the state you live in and you will get a list of the jobs and home time options available in your area.
