we did not figure in a pay for me , just the operating costs that we know must be paid out and our normal bills , to me as long as my bills are being paid and im living in the negative thats all that matters to me especially being a 1st time o/o i understand it will take a good bit of time to get the money coming in .

like i said if we pay off a few other bills we have for my current business that operating cost should come down , not alot but it will come down some .

Just my opinion but you should'nt be trying to start as an owner operator to pay bills that have to do with your current business. Going to be hard enough to make money starting off as an owner op. Good luck.

Yea i assumed the driver pay was included in the 1.70.

You always have to pay yourself its not like your bills are gonna get cheaper because you hauled cheap freight.

as for trailer i have yet to buy one , i really think it might be better for me to just lease a trailer vs buy 1 trailer and only be able to hual certain things , its up in the air yet honestly .

there basic bills like insurance , phone , electric , other goofy stuff that would simply go away when i stop that business

the bills we do have are just your average household bills which are included in tha 1.70 figure . and i should be able to get alittle bit lower rate there if i do some cutting

as for the pay , yes i know i need to have a wage , and it will be taken care of but for now the main focus is making sure the "bills" are paid , the vacations and other extras can come later

Just pan your vacations around breakdowns and you'll be good.

i used to work for cummins , so im just going to carry a spare egr valve/cooler/and some silicone with me and fix it myself i even have insite on my laptop. lol.... but no seriously im pretty dedicated to working , i was brought up to work when there is work , and relax when there is none . and knowing my luck if i have a major breakdown it will be in a remote location where there aint nothing .

so any other thoughts ? we didnt close on the truck this week , and the delay {the loan guy is busy} keeps us asking if we will be able to get work and keep rolling

so my question is , in this economy , for a new guy , if i hustle will i make it ? i know there are alot of variables , but the economy does have us thinking

also , we did some numbers over , my wife really inflated some numbers without me knowing , but our operating costs are around 1.48 now ....

Did you ask OOIDA for an insurance quote? That would be my first call. Bowman leases trailers out of Hagerstown and there is a place out on Long Island called Talay. Go lease a 53' dry van from them. There are plenty of grocery loads coming out of Mechanicsburg and Carlisle doing high revenue short haul to NJ, CT, NY, MA. The backhaul is the hard part to find. Brokers do not care how long you've been driving truck, stop focusing on that and don't even mention it.

I got my authority when I was living in New Cumberland. I hauled groceries almost exclusively and was home most days and made good money. Ryder Logistics and Exel control most of the warehouses around there. Try to get in with them and you'll never worry about finding a load. If I were to do it over, I'd have probably went flatbed from the beginning as backhauls are easier to find, but it's also more costly on startup. To give you an idea, I was getting 6-700 to go from Aspers, PA to Elizabeth, NJ, with another $60-80 to unload a straight pull. I was doing 6-7 per week going to various places in the Northeast, and that was when fuel 2-2.50 a gallon.
