CDL Permit

I think TSA requires a CDL number before you can undergo the federal threat assessment. That's my reading of their homepage:

The TSA Hazardous Materials Endorsement Threat Assessment Program conducts a security threat assessment for any driver seeking to obtain, renew, or transfer a hazardous materials endorsement (HME) on a state-issued commercial drivers license (CDL).

The program was implemented to meet the requirements of the PATRIOT Act (pdf, 848KB), which prohibits states from issuing a license to transport hazardous materials in commerce unless a determination has been made that the driver does not pose a security risk. The Act further requires that the risk assessment include checks of criminal history records, legal status, and relevant international databases.

If you seek to obtain, renew, or transfer an HME on your CDL, you must apply for a security threat assessment. TSA rules require you to begin applying for the security threat assessment at least 30 days prior to the expiration of your CDL.

 

I know several drivers who have the TWIC card and no CDL.

 

As far as endorsements on your permit there isn't a need to get any unless u do like DTB said and start the process for the hzmt endorsement once I got my license I got the hzmt endorsement and I plan to add tanker just to have it.....don't know if ill use hzmt that much on the flatbed side though

 

TWIC and the CDL are only generally related--one is not required for the other. TWIC was established by Congress through the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) and is administered by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and U.S. Coast Guard. TWICs are tamper-resistant biometric credentials issued to workers who require unescorted access to secure areas of ports, vessels, outer continental shelf facilities and all credentialed merchant mariners. Over 1 million workers including longshoremen, truckers, port employees and others are required to obtain a TWIC.

 

Forgot about tsa being involved on the hazmat. I am dropping it next year as a waste of money.

Just remembered they were involved in TWIC and did not connect.

 

Lots of folks in my neck of the woods have TWIC cards because of the proximity to Canada. There are many, many secure warehouses for all kinds of things and to get into one of them, a worker must have a TWIC.

TSA wants to rule the world.

 

Roadmedic... this is a Prime thread, and the guys need to know there are distinct advantages in having one here. While it may offer no advantage to you, it does to us. TWIC is required - we go into ports - even if it is a joke.

You are right about the joke though.

 

as far as ive heard. you dont need to have your permit when you join prime you can obtain you cdl permit at primes school

 

you dont have to have it but its easier on you when you get here if you do
