Excellent Explanation
Can Bus System of sorts. I got it.
Is my system (1995) one of the ones that the speedo reads directly from the sensor?
This is COE 1995 N14 Cummins. The instruments on the dash look nothing like they do today.

didn't some older Freightliners use a splitter/amplifier to share the road speed sensor output with both speedo and ECM?
Mine is a '98 FLD with dual speed sensor output, one for speedo and one for ECM. The only time i've ever had trouble with both cruise and speedo was because the tone wheel at the back of the transmission was loose on the shaft (loose yoke). Might be something to check if you're going to pull the speed sensor.Last edited: Oct 24, 2011

Thanks for the tip.
I just bought this truck and it appears that the 3rd member is not the original or has been changed. You saying on the back of the transmission. Tone Wheel must be for counting pulses? The speedo shows about 15 or 20 miles per hour at speed but that's it. I'll check the back of the tranny. Oh, does this have anything to do with ABS?Last edited: Oct 24, 2011

The tone wheel is easy to check; some transmissions have it exposed to view, most i've seen have it inside the housing at the back into which the speed sensor threads. to check it simply pull the speed sensor, and try to move the large toothed wheel inside. if it moves, your yoke is loose.
ABS is a different system; each sensor, though similar, is mounted on the wheel end, and the controller may be either on the brake valve in the rear, or inside under the right bunk compartment.
