Which truck.

A person can't really say one brand/model of truck with one engine and transmission is better than the others. It all depends on the situation that the equipment is being run in. For normal run of the mill OTR dry van a Freightliner Columbia with a older Detroit and 13 speed would probably be the most profitable. But you put that same truck in a harsh enviroment like heavy haul and more than likely it wouldn't far as good as a properly speced unit. There are way to many variables to take into consideration to claim to say brand "X" is better than brand "Y".

 

As he said, if you let us know the type of work you plan to do, then we might be able to steer you in the right direction as far as spec's for a unit.

But remember, you are asking truckers, so you will still probably get 300 different answers

 

that is always a very hot subject, so don't expect an "answer". go with what your gut is telling you.

 

and just to be little more helpful, always consider the cost of operating one brand over another and that brand's model over another. all of us love and admire looks of classic "looking" trucks, but at the end, aerodynamic ones will give you better mpgs and will add more $ to your acct. i do prefer manual (13 if possible) over auto, but again, that is a personal preference.

 

Anytime Freight, you need to answer these 3 questions before you get adequate answers.

1. Where do you want to "run"? (i.e., local, So Cal only, Cali only, west coast, WA, OR, CA, 11 western states ID, NV, UT, AZ, NM, CO, MT, WY

2. What kind of freight you want to haul? Dry Van (beverages, beer, grocery items, etc), Flatbed (lumber, machinery, PVC, steel I-beams, etc), Tanker (food grade, syrup, molten sulfur, etc), Specialized stuff (over-sized equipment, farm machinery, military equipment, etc)?

3. What is your budget? New or used truck?

Once you do some serious "soul searching" and researching on the above questions, you will get decent answers from the veterans on this forum.

 

A Company Truck with no knowledge in the industry and the way freight in going you would be better off just throwing you money in a bucket and burning it less headache

 

Uh oh AM77.....now you're going to have all the 379ers on here talking about how they get 8mpg, lol.

 

If I asked you what kind of car to get, what would you tell me? The answers are almost limitless.

But like others said, tell us what you're hauling, and where, and it can be narrowed down (slightly).
