Transitioning out of the Army in January 2012. Attending Katlaw driving school in November and the plan is to go with Schneider as they seem to have a pretty good operation (from my limited research). Any advice would be appreciated especially from anyone who served a long time in the military and experienced combat.

    Thanks in advance!!

Fomer jarhead here, did Iraq(Ramadi), Helmand Province as a scout sniper, and in all honesty, if your heart it set on trucking do it, but if were you Id use the gi bill and go get a degree or something. Use your TA to pay for school or I hope thats what you're doing. I just got out in June, and applied to Conway Freight and was hired. they're very military friendly. I refused to leave home again for extended periods and after all the horror stories ive read on here, I decided LTL suited me best. It has its ups and downs and super slow weeks, where I only work 2 days and there are days I work 6 days and gross like 12/1300 dollars. If you save you can get by during the slow weeks. Im single, no kids so thats really easy for me.

But I hear Schneider is a decent outfit to work at, so if that's what you choose, then good luck with it. Just do your homework, and if you do decide to use your GI Bill benefits, do not use it to get that extra like 900 bucks a month for a year. complete waste, give it to your kids in that case. Well good luck with whatever you choose, as its ultimately your choice, and soon you'll realize the civilian world is a totally different place

Former army 82th airborne, now with the 50 IBCT (weekend warriors) if you are part of the national guard you are able to get your cdl without using your g.I bill they have a program with some driving schools in the east coast that actually give you college credits for the cdl. I just finished mines thru union county college with smith and Solomon driving schools. It's way better than paying out of pockets, using your g.I bill or being stuck in a 1 year contract in a crappy company.

Hey Paratroopertotrucker... Are you at Bragg?? There is a troops to roughneck school near there that are training marines that are transitioning and they are taking TA!! If I were you I would walk away from Scheinder unless you want to really go OTR then in that case I guess that would be fine since you are starting. They are not the best but are not the worse out there either!! I have family that drive for them and there experiences have been about the same...3.5 weeks out and a few days home!! They are workaholics but the pay is not that great for how long they have been there and the miles they get!! They did say that there training program was good!! I am assuming that you have the Post 911 Gi Bill?? Are you going to use it?? It will be kinda hard to drive trucks and go to school online!! I'm not saying it cannot be done!! It just doesn't seem safe to do both!! Not to talk you out of it but the Post 911 GI Bill pays out very well and you can also draw unemployment at the same time!! Just saying you earned them why not take a break for a minute and have some fun before you get back into another contract!!

Just throwing it out there roehl transport will pay for your school 100% just for serving no contracts all u pay is hotel, food and licensing fees. Sni is a good company and may even offer the same program, I'm not sure. It's called the honor program and I'm almost certain they still offer it.
