Hello,
I graduated from Smith & Solomon truck driving school on Sept28 so I'm as green as they come.LOL I've been looking at many companies and looking on the site to see the comments people have written and I'm really unsure of what to do.
I have been pre hired with Swift to do Northeast Regional OTR and I have been pre hired with Schneider national as a Tanker driver. I want to be the best driver I can be so training is very important.
I really need some advice from experienced drivers, is starting out as a tanker driver a bad idea? I would really appreciate any advice you could give me. Thanks, see ya on the road.
Too many choices and not sure what to do.

You need to make your decision fairly quickly. You have already let quite a bit of time pass since you finished school. Most companies are going to make you take a fresher course if you wait longer than a month since you graduated. Its costly too! Better get on it!
JerseyJerry68 Thanks this. -
My son is NE regional w/ swift on P@G dedicated(NY,NJ,Pa,Conn.)He's always rolling. Tanker Yankers make more money and it could lead to a gas hauling home every day job.Really it's your choice,I read a lot of good things about schneider on this forum . BTW he went to Smith Solomon in Linden also.I see in past posts you also applied to Sisco, from what I gather you have to do a lot of backbreaking work with them,so if you want drop @hook stay away from them.JerseyJerry68 Thanks this.

Tanker Hauling is good experience. If it was me just starting, I would do tanker just for the experience of it. If after a year you decide you want to do box/flatbed, at least you can know you have tanker experience. I know some old timers with 30 plus years that have no tanker time. So yes, I would go that route. Good luck!

If you get into tankers and are hauling hazmat you'll find out that the product means more than the driving. Hauling gasoline to a station in the city is not as easy as it looks. There's a bunch more regulations you've got to know and there's a lot more responsibility you'll be required to know. If you are like me then the more the better. I like the challenge and doing a job better the next day than the day before is just one self-imposed requirement I like. You'll never find better pay OTR for hours worked. However, I know nothing of SNI coming in with tankers. I'm sure it's not like the regular tanker job you see and the pay will be no where close to a good tanker outfit. But if you can use them for experience then go for it. But be warned, companies are already asking for in town gasoline deliveries experience so they know that the bottom feeders will not qualify.

This is very good advice and also very true...
However, chemical hauling can be and is just, if not more, lucrative than gas hauling... I do both.....
The real deal is HazMat... this is the experience you need... smooth bore is also a plus... not sure what Schnieder hauls but HazMat chemical can be top notch experience and will also open doors... best of luck -
You're right, I should have explained more. Anytime a trucking company takes you aside and trains you in special handling the pay may go up. It all depends on the company and what the expecty out of you once you are trained. Believe me I'd much rather be dropping at a good distance from some of the idiots at the stations where thousands of gallons of gasoline is following right near them. That is as long as the company has trained me the proper way.
