I get an email or phone call every few weeks from J.B. Hunt. I received a call a couple of days ago. The recruiter told me that they no longer have owner operators. They have gone to this program, instead. It is a great deal for JB Hunt. They only have people who have their own authority pulling their trailers rather than owner operators. If you pull their trailer you must have cartage insurance, which is insurance which covers their trailer should anything happen. If you use their fuel card then they make a tidy profit from your use. Some of these carriers get up over $0.50/gallon or more off the pump price. J.B. Hunt only passes along about $0.07/gallon to those with whom they contract. I have no doubt that they are getting at least $2-2.50/mile for their loads and probably more on some. They pay the contractors/carriers $1.67/mile (including the fsc) so JB Hunt is doing very well. With the fuel discount that will add about $0.01/mile to your bottom line. Every little bit helps. Personally, I do better on my own, but some may make it work. I think that most could make as much leased to a carrier and let them go to the expense of paying for insurance and authority. I don't think that it is a very good deal when you have to pay for the costs of being a carrier for what they want to pay. You can lease to a number of carriers and get a much better discount on fuel and should get as good of a rate. It would be interesting to hear from some who have worked this program.

I heard a couple months ago they did away form the added insurance but maybe that has changed again.
I have it in my business plan for company trucks we are starting to purchase as the "fall back" plan. If we have a couple slow weeks we can throw the guy on with JBH and then pull him when ever I want.
Guy north of me in IL has two drivers and had both trailers needing major work and looking at having guys shutdown for over a week. So he did this to keep them rolling. Now he has 12 trucks and figures he can get to 25 before he stops adding.
But agree, other than back-up, an independent O/O can do betterBigJohn54 Thanks this. -
It might be something that might work if things got really slow. One time when I called I was told that they wanted carriers to commit to 14 days at a time. I suppose things can change all the time. If one doesn't own a trailer and can't rent or buy one, it would be a way to keep your authority and still keep moving. As far as insurance, I seem to remember that they will charge you a fee per load for trailer insurance if you don't want to get cartage insurance.

Yeah we have been running this for a little while now. Not too bad of a deal. They just added a new pay plan but we didnt switch to it because the agent (Bobby) we work with said it was too new to give any advice and he said the majority of carrier run hybrid pay since they had another rate increase a couple of weeks ago. If you have good customers or brokers that is the way to go. We only use them when our stuff slows down. It's not a grand money maker but keeps the drivers moving and happy and they always have something when noone else has anything. I have a buddy in OH and this is all he runs on. He started on it and now he is semi retired and just hires O/O and runs them on this, he currently has 9 trucks on it and most of his guys seem happy. They did do away with the general liability also which isnt that big of a deal unless you are a 1 or 2 man show. If you want the straight info call this Bobby Nozovsky (how ever you spell his name). We will probably keep running this until dry season then we are going back to grain, pays wayyyyy better while it last! Goos luck guys bernnn bernnnnnnn
