I willingly quit my job at the beginning of this year. I have not been employed since, save for a short temporary job. I am applying for OTR jobs and have been informed that the DOT requires proof of unemployment. I have been told that I need 3 letters from unrelated references verifying my unemployment period. The unrelated requirement will be a challenge, but I should be able to get 3 letters with a little coercion.

My question is this: how should the letter be set up? I would think 1 sentence would suffice... I do not want to ask someone to spend their time typing a letter when I do not even know what it should look like. I have thought about typing a form letter and handing each reference a copy to sign, but I'm not sure if that would be acceptable.

Any input on the issue would be greatly appreciated!

It is not a DOT requirement it is the company that your trying to get a job with that is requiring it. Its also ridiculous that you need to have 3 unrelated people confirming that you have been unemployed! I have never heard of such a thing! I think the company wants to verify that you willingly quit your job on good terms and werent fired for undesirable reasons. Write a form letter that says yes he has been unemployed for said period hand it to 3 friends have them sign and date it and put their phone numbers.

Go to your neighbor's, have them simply write that to the best of your Knowledge their knowledge you are or have been unemployed If you filed for ue benefit's show any correspondence you may have recieved from your state ue office. ASK THE COMPANY YOU ARE APPLYING TO EXACTLY WHAT THEY REQUIRE.
It's not that hard to figure out.

I had to do that for FedEx Ground. It's part of the past 10 years thing. Which I thought was just for your past 10 years in trucking if you had it and not for students. But I was off due to an accident and only needed one letter to verify it. I just had a friend write on that said I was in a car accident, I was unable to work and was off from ##/##/#### to ##/##/####.

I think just a short note/letter would be fine...
Since you have a gap in your employment history, they are just tring to verify that uou were not in prision, the looney bin, or other questionable place...
Also many companies get a tax credit for putting an unemployed individual back to work...about $5000 if i remember right, when you make your first deliveryafter training...so they want to sure they can get it i bet....

Sorry, but your wrong. DOT requires your whearabouts to be confirmed for the last three years whether driving or not. I believe the excuse is you could have been at a terrorist training camp or something.

OP, a form letter for all three people should be fine where they just fill in their info. Something like Modern Drifter, who is a friend/neighbor/baby's daddy's brother, was unemployed from 22bc to 2011ad to the best of my knowledge.

I agree with your reasoning, however, what I don't get is that the 3 references could be any bum on the street with a cell phone willing to be a reference for $5.... And just because I am not working means that I have not spent any of that time in a mosque or militia cell??? I'm confused, so I guess this is just another asinine government regulation, written by a bunch of suits who do not drive or live in the real world.

Thanks everyone for your helpful input. I'll get started on that form letter:biggrin_2554:

I had to do that with Landstar many years ago all I did was have a letter typed up saying to the best of my knowledge XXXXX was unemployed from xx-xx-xxxx to xx-xx-xxx and had three people sign it....Landstar also required it to be notarized which was BS I thought but it is what it is... :smt102

no big deal just make up some BS letter and give them what they want..
