Hello, My dad is going up to NY in a couple of weeks to move furniture to his cottage he recently bought. He using his friends F350 diesel dually with company logos on both the truck and a 15ft storage trailer. Does he need a CDL to operate this type of vehicle? If he does, can he cover up the company logos and put "Not for hire" to avoid the CDL laws??? All help is appreciated. Hunter
I think, not a leo, just think he needs a note from company that he is borrowing the truck for personal use. The F-350 shouldnt pose a problem, no worse than my Dodge 2500 having signs on it. He may have to stop at weigh scales if it is a commercial plate on the license. The Ford is only a one ton pickup. I should point out that I did have a one ton dually that I did drive through NY (From Maine to Wilton, NY) with personal plates, that had company logos on the sides. I was never stopped during the time.
NY is known for stopping dualies with big trailers behind them especially if they go by a DOT check point...The race car haulers get nabbed quite a bit and checked out the most, sorry KH I can't help with the legalities of it just pointing out they do draw some attention..
In NYS the only time you need a CDL is if: 1) Any single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more. 2)A trailer with a GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds if the gross combination weight rating (GCWR) is 26,001 pounds or more. 3)A vehicle designed to transport 15 or more passengers (excluding the driver) 4)Any size vehicle that requires hazardous material placards
He will be fine without a cdl. Even if he ran into a D.O.T. Checkpoint, once they found out he is moving household goods, he will be sent on way. The majority of small trailers and pick up trucks that are stopped are lawn maintenance companies. They never secure their gas and oil cans.....easy pickings. Besides, snowstorm moving in Saturday, D.O.T will be idle for a few days. Have a safe trip.
