I wouldn't be so quick to judge. These are desperate times. If a driver needed money for his wife's cancer meds or to keep the bank from taking his house, would that make things look different?
I wouldn't buy the fuel and I wouldn't judge him- we have no idea what's motivating him. You guys talk tough but what would you do in a desperate fix?
The man has some credibility- he works somewhere. When you need fast cash to do something important, will you compromise your personal integrity? Probably depends on the situation.
Would You Report This Driver?

Dave , there is no way you can spin theft to Make it not theft.
Yes there are times when you can understand the motives and have some compassion.
Heck you may even want to cheer them on at times.
However it just isn't right.
Stealing fuel from a company to sell is no different to stealing fuel from the driver next door.
That is how the law sees it.
If this is allowed the whole society will spiral in to moral decay.
Guess it all comes down to your ethics.
If you feel so bad for the other guy then help him out of your own pocket , don't involve your self in theft. -
I'd just be sure of the reason before I got involved. I had to sell fuel one time at an old 76 truck stop. I had 300 gallons in this D8-L dozer I was hauling to Salt Lake City. I just picked it up at the vender and went to scale it. It was over on weight so something had to come off. I was actice duty Navy and the Dozer was configured for range clearance of unexploded bombs. I guess the proper way would have to unload the fuel at a military base but I didn't have the permits to get there. I told my boss that I was going to sell it and use the money for tolls or any other expenses I would have with the truck. It was good fuel too and not dyed. I sold it for .50¢ a gallon and I had a line of trucks lined up wanting to fuel. It was a clean deal and that day I saved the government money. Not one dime went into my pockets. So you never know.

Thanks- that's exactly what I'm talking about. What's wrong with selling fuel when you own the company? Or when you fueled and found yourself overweight?
Trucking isn't drawn in straight lines with right and wrong defined. As a businessman you have to think outside the box.
Again, none of us was put here to judge the rest of us, and selling fuel could be a smart- or necessary- or desperate move. Isn't that for the driver to decide but not us? -
Gotta love people that preach situational ethics.
In my opinion you have no ethics at all if they are flexible. See in the adult non fantasy world black is black, white is white, wrong is wrong, A=A not B because your feelings tell you it must because A is just to harsh.
A man that will steal from anybody will steal from everybody. I do not care what decisions he or she made in life to get themselves to the point taking what is not theirs. Of they all have an excuse, none of which gives them the right to take anything from rightful owners by fraud or force.
Nice story. Not sure I would have admitted to a felony on a public board though. To each their own and the statute of limitations is probably long since past. Either way I would have kept selling government property off my list of accomplishments.SmoothShifter Thanks this. -
I'd let him get caught all by himself. It doesn't look like he is going to need any help from me.
-
You'd have to really explain that one as a felony to me so I can be sure to let my old friends back at my base know what the Captain did when I got the awards for savings funds. The whole trip saved over $250,000 and I can assure you it was reviewed by everyone that had any dealings with it. Including the top at the Pentagon. I was stationed in a R&R shop which had all kinds of projects going on where we did what we needed to do. Any EOD can tell you about R&R or code 50 at Indian Head, Stump heck. So nice try but wroung.

I agree, let him hang himself it's bound to happen.

Missed the active navy part. Wasn't aware the navy had a driver MOS. But if you were ordered( or OK'd after call) not a felony.
Civilian disposing of Military Property would be a felony. -
Remember old Robin Hood the folk hero that stole from the rich and gave to the poor. well, it turns out that that whole story was b.s. In the book Robin Hood: The Unknown Templar that I just read declares that d bagger was just another slimey criminal. He stole from the rich & then lent the money to the poor. there was not selflessness about it. Just saying.
