I'm down here from Canada and it looks like I'll stay.

When I arrived I had been a trucker for most of my life. But I quickly discovered that little of my years in Canada counted for squat. I had to go to a local driving school, "rent" a tractor trailer and "retest". Sadly for them, there were several others there testing for a CDL needed in their work and they got to watch me breeze thru the test course, etc. Lot of long faces there that day. Kinda PO'd the "tester" when I found a crack in the frame and a bad brake on the old trailer in the Pretrip that he didn't know was there.
Anyhow, I'm still working with my Green Card. I may one day go for citizenship. Kinda waiting to see what they do with Obama and co.
The hardest things I've found so far is just figuring out the day to day stuff. You know, the things that are somewhat similar to the things back home but not quite. Amazing how many of the "natives" really understand them either.
Anyroads, it looks like you've given it all lots of thought and are well on your way. Just don't forget that "the best plans of mice and men oft gang aglay" as RB put it.
And don't pay attention to ourb"friend" here. Everyplace has it's whiners who lack the balls to get up and leave. Just wind blowing, nothing more.
Good on ya Mate. -
White Dog will enjoy Australia until he realizes there is no right to own firearms, no freedom of speech, no freedom of association and oppressive taxation. Until he actually experiences what that is like, he will think he wants out of the US.
Nobody is forcing him to stay.112racing, KiloByte, Hitman and 1 other person Thank this. -
Check out the hotshot and expediter forums here . If I was in your position I wouldn't choose the lifestyle of an OTR carrier . Expedite carriers let inexperienced drivers train with an experienced driver . The trucks are all O/O with many fleet owners . Fleet owners give the driver or team 60% of the revenue but fuel has to be paid out of that . The driver has the right to refuse loads . Most drivers have 75% availability . They work 3 weeks then take a week off .
-
That then brings up another question, say i got my cdl, what are the chances I could get experience with an o/o? like a privateer (perhaps thats not the word) as it would save all the hoops im jumping through at the moment (having to prove where I worked for the last few years, and giving them the email and phone no. of my last boss isnt good enough...)
-
That question has been asked a thousand times here . If an O/O is running solo it's because that's the way he likes it . If he wants to run with someone else it's going to be someone he really knows .
That's why I mentioned expediting . The fleet owners are O/O's with several trucks . They aren't as particular about drivers as O/O's that are running their own single truck .
Could you buy a truck yourself and hire a driver to work with you ? -
nah, and dont really wanna go that route, Im happy to pay for a cdl, as thats education which can be used now or 20 years from now

Just find your Navy Recruiter and tell him the only way you will go is the following.
I want to make sure I get on a Air Craft Carrier that will port out from Perth and Tazmania on the way back from the Gulf. " I made the Voyage in 1995 in August" I can still see the women on the Beach when we came ashore.

Did that guy leave the country yet? lol
Sage courses are all PTDI certified. -
Gambinos Wrath, I meet Australians once in awhile on the road. You're going to enjoy yourself. I'm with Ya, I would find a solid school and pay for it- it gives you more choices and independence.
Frankly, I have a new found respect and admiration for Australians:
