Not as good as older XE....God love us and protect us...there are DAF XE engines scrapped all over the countryside here...cracked heads....running bearings....drinking oil...hemorrhaging coolant...Thankfully the vast majority of them have been scrapped/exported at this stage...And fair play to Paccar...they have made their 'best' engine the XE even worse with the MX...they are Scania/Volvo/Mercedes best sales testimonial

have 6 Petes with the MX engine , 1 blown motor at 2000 miles the other 5 spend more time in the shop or on the back of the lowbed being towed to the shop. ithink i made a mistake with the MX.

I'm sorry to hear that, we have those problems with those engines over here too, I bought 2 brand new dafs in 2003, every week one or the other was broken down somewhere, it never ended! Complete junk ! Will peterbilt change the engines for u if they continue to give problems? I'm assuming they're all new trucks, over here we don't get the option of a different brand of engine.

I have 6 of the older 12,6l DAF's.
Can't fault the engines.
I also have Merc , Cummins,Cat,MAN,Volvo,Hino and UD(Nissan).
Range between 200 000 and 500 000 miles.
Good on fuel , only beaten by straight six Merc.
I guess I'm just lucky if I listen to some of the comments.
Our trucks are 6x4, typically gross at 100 to 105 000lbs.
Sea level to 6000ft.
The problems we have had all relate to wires on the ZF Astronic transmissions.
I hope I keep being lucky with the motor.
Just had a driver call me , another transmission problem.
Probably just wiring again. -
I hung out with one mx 460 last week it pulls very well lot of hills good on fuel with 44200lbs it give 6.15mpg on huge hills and i am very impressed with its engine brake on 9% long slope with some bends it can hold 37mille with 44200lbs ( hill is 7mille long)
on 8% 4mille slope it hold 45mph -
BTW, there is no Euro-III Paccar MX and that's why on markets with old emission standards, like in Asia ore Africa Paccar use old good UPEC. UPEC is Bosh MS6.1 controlled. It is very reliable ECM, may be damaged with overvoltage, bad grounding and wrong polarity only. PLD pumps are like on Mercedes, by Bosch, reliable too.
With newer MS7 unit (SMART injection system) wires are thinner. ECM is good, the weak point of MX is SCR system and injectors (they are like on CRD, but no common rail, every injector is supplied with PLD pump, but injector is open with electric pulse).
If injector leaks - no rail pressure drop like on CRD, just some cyl. ballance issues. So IMO, this system is better CRD and twin coil injectors. Easier to fix,
Ok, MX with SMART is an example of different approach to increase injection pressure -
I hope your luck keeps up, look out for tell tale signs like using water, oil, smokey after idling, if u see these things get rid of it straight away!
You got HINO in south Africa ? They are assembled here in Ireland and are a very popular choice for dump truck applications, they are not common in Europe outside of Ireland, I've seen a few in England but nowhere else, they are a tough, simple and a rugged machine with good ground clearance and nothing to break on the outside that's why they are so popular here -
Got a 2012 Pete 386 with MX motor at 455bhp.
Just got to 50,000miles and all good so far. Averaging 6.5mpg on long haul reefer work.
Doesn't pull as good as a C15 but it is a smaller engine to be fair.
No complaints so far. -
I take back some of what I said! Pacaar engines can make a millions kms! I saw one with a million on the clock! It was absolutely f###ed but it made a million kms, it was 2005, superspace cab daf with all the trimmings , lovely looking machine, it belongs to lombard finance, how much did it make at auction? I hear you ask, €3,500 to be exact, bought for scrap! A similar scania with the same mileage would make close to €40,000 here,

I wonder what that Scania would bring at a Ritchie Bro sale in Edmonton?.
