In the rural areas of Oklahoma, most of the ODOT employees were using the state job for insurance purposes. They also usually had a 2nd job or were farmers and ranchers. You'll NEVER get rich working for the state, for sure. On the other hand, I am invested in our retirement plan and will start drawing that money when I turn 55. Like every other job out there, it has its positive and negative sides.
