container hauling

No container experience?? It's easier than pulling a van trailer, I mean the lights don't even have to work, the wheels can wobble and a tire blow out doesn't require you to stop

 

well i signed up with marine transport hauling cans out of baltimore,md to columbus,oh. worked 3 day last week went well after fuel brought home 1300 for 3 days not bad. doing top end this week.....so will lat ya know in a few weeks how it works out for me. i know marine has a office in sc as well main office is in mountainside,nj

 

It's not that bad..... I handle ISO tanks along with domestics. They are a bit cheap here in Houston but easy to deal with. One of the biggest attributes is they make good filler work, just don't eat a steady diet.

And the Vuttos run junk because they want to however Deputy Dawg has set up portables outside the biggest port........ so it don't take long to figure out you need to get it right.

 

Talk to the people that haul them. I'm setup to haul them for a local company that does containers. The condition of some of the chassis are keeping me away from doing more. They didn't pay too bad at all. Loaded cans, expect them to be heavy.

 

It's not great but I'll do around $120,000 this year hauling containers being home every night and off 90% of the weekends. When I hauled household for North American Van lines I did between $225,000 & $250,000 a year but I had labor, motels, meals and much more fuel so maybe it's not all about the gross.

You can't pull that kind of money running the West Coast ports though....

 

You need container exp. if you want to make money.
I did the container thing for about 5 of my 10 yrs, There are about 15-20 rail yards around here and the same w/ container yards. each yard has a different way of doing things, you can spend hours looking for your load if you dont know whats going on.

Right now there is a company offering $750 to run Chi- Grand rapids MI loaded and back empty thats 350 mi. and probably an 8 hr day.

 

I ran under my own authority hauling cans.
I know alot of guys who hauled cans, had trucks hauling cans for them.
Now I work for a company that uses can haulers to bring freight to our warehouses.
That is what I base this answer on

NO MONEY IN HAULING CANS IN THE NW

 

BTW NW like seattle and oregon.
I now nothing about the rest of the ports.

 

I also ran all the Chicago rail yards with the giant pumpkin, so i know exactly what you are talking about. Once I got the spotting phone numbers for each yard, finding my loads was a breeze.....but i didn't figure that out untill year 2 LOL
