Hello, My wife & i are thinking of pursuing our CDL's. We have worked for a fortune 500 co. for the last 11 yrs as CNC machinest. We believe our current jobs will be going to China within the next couple yrs. Im thinking of training OTR first and then ASAP training her and team driving. We are together 24/7 now so being in a cab together that much is no problem, We are age 51/43 have clean driving records. I know companys have different policies, do you folks think this plan is do-able?

What could we expect our pay scale to be ( starting & experienced)?
How many miles a week might we drive?
How long are you normally in training?
Not looking for a best or worse case but realistic case.
Would love to have input from other H/W tems.

Thanx for your input & remember....BUY AMERICAN !!!!!

I can't attest to team driving, but if your going for your CDL first expect to be out (depending on company) A month or two. Training her I would think that conflict with company policies, but I don't know.. Roehl split the H/W team up that went to my orientation and the Wife didn't make it. Husband stayed because he had no job. Also prepare if they do split ya'll up between trainers (if going in together or even her coming in later), that one of ya'll might not make it. What then? Plan that out and know that it can happen. As for team driving miles, alot of teams I talk to get 5k-6k. Low? I don't know.

Being that your on here asking questions, your wanting to learn. You and your wife have the will to make this happen just follow through. School choice is very important. The H/W team from my orientation was from my local area. They attended a 3 week course vs my 8 week. I was not in the truck during training with the husband, but the wife was in mine. The wife was trained on a 8 or 9spd. But then switched to a automatic. So she never got the actual training she deserved and could not shift a 10spd to save her life.

To sum up the story, choose wisely on what schools both of you attend as it can make you, or break you.

I understand many husbands do not want their wives on a truck with a stranger, but I'd strongly advise you not to train her yourself. Both of you would be better trained by an experienced driver. Then come back together to team after your training is complete.

You can keep your current job and get that CDLA on weekends. It would be best to have it in hand just when your current job goes overseas as cdls have a shelf life. Then you should apply to as many companies as you can that have terminals near your house. They will give you prehires and you can pick the one that suits you the best. You will not be allowed to train your wife until you have trainer status which might take a year or more, she can however come along as a passenger for a small insurance fee.Once she's out of training then you can team drive with her.
The pay scales vary depending on what company or account you are on.When you are in training phase only expect 3-400 per week, after that pay is milage based so it all depends on how hard you run.

I met a couple who were with Covenant. They trained with different trainers and then were put together after their training. I don't recall their income, but they seemed to be happy with their paychecks. My guess would be between $70-90,000 split. Teams should be able to run 5-7,000 miles per week.

    Keyword here "should".

What you earn as a team will rely on many factors. Your ability and drive being first and foremost.

We have teams that do 5400 miles a week, and home on weekends. We have teams that do 5000 miles a week, and only go home once a month.

    Another consideration, what company.

As a new driver(s). You'll split as low as 22 cents a mile, up to .45 a mile. Choose your company carefully !!! There can be as much as $40k a year difference between jobs.

A good husband and wife team should make around $100k a year, combined.

A bust ### husband and wife team, can make up to $130k a year.

Every couple is different. Some are happy making $75k a year, combined.

Thanks for the good info lantern,
We'll be able to enroll in driving school together because of our rotating 12hr shifts W/ the help of burning a few vacation hrs from time to time. Im looking at a nearby tech college's accredited 10wk course. I've read several horror stories on the forum about recruters. With that being said, I will still be employed in my current job after obtaining my CDL's which will afford me time to carefully select company's to consider. If all works out, i plan to be settled into driving for awhile before she makes the leap.

As for my gal, she has a strong work ethic w/ a can do attude. Crash & burn is simply not an option for her...LOL!

Wish us luck & the same to you.... and again, THANKS!

Thanks for the advise, I see where your coming from.

Is it the trainers descretion or hrs behind the wheel etc. that determins when your training is complete?

    Thanks'
