Rates vary according to the region of the country and type of freight.

Only you can determine your operating cost.

Freight rates can vary widely from region to region. I would not put too much credence in any of the national average rates. You can basically get what your negotiating skills and the market will allow. I have a friend who consistently gets $2+/mile with a dry van. I am confident that is above the national average. Another carrier might only get $1.50. It boils down to your negotiating skills and what is going on in the market. Personal relationships and your history with a particular broker or shipper also comes into play.

Do you plan on only hauling freight at cost? What type of freight do you plan on hauling? Van, reefer, flat, step deck, double drop, cars? All of these will have a different average rate. Each involves a different type of freight.
