First make sure your squelch is up just past where it stops making noise and no more. The farther to the right you crank it the more it cuts out everyone except those 100 ft. from you.

Lately skip has been rolling. In case you wonder what it is, it's when conditions in the ionosphere cause signals to be transferred in other areas far away. When it happens you might have a hard time hearing the guy 2 miles up the road but you'll hear the guy 3 states away clear as a bell.

Make sure your coax is clean and tight. Make sure you don't get water in the coax jacket.

You need to check your SWR to make sure you don't have more signal getting sent back down the antenna into the radio which damages the radio. To do this you get an SWR meter and install between the radio and antenna, and follow the directions for the meter. Then if needed you adjust the height of the antenna to get the SWR to at least 2.0:1 SWR, or better, 1.5:1 SWR. Get the SWR as low as you can.

To get rid of roger beep and talk back will require having a shop remove them for you. Why did you buy a radio with this if you just want them removed? Was it a special truck stop deal in the parking lot? You'd probably be better off selling the radio and buying one you like as opposed to paying extra to have the roger beep and talk back removed.

What channel does the radio need to be on....depends on what channel you or your friends want to use. Channel 19 is usually reserved for when you're driving down the interstate, although some people like to tie up 19 for their own gain. Channel 9 is supposed to be the emergency channel though it's not used much anymore. All other channels are open game.

I've heard of a supposedly good CB shop around the Nashville area, but I can't remember the name or which hwy it's on. Maybe somebody will chime in here.

If you get over around Memphis, really West Memphis, try the CB shop by the Petro (not the Channel 5 CB Shop) I forget the name of it. "Pro Tech" maybe? Make sure you are talking to RAY before you leave your radio.

(there has been some confusion lately about who is doing the work now in this shop.....don't know if Ray hired a new guy, or was off for a while or whoever posted here that said Ray wasn't there was just was confused)

    Ray
has been doing CB work for years in the Memphis area. (used to be at Everybodie's Electronics in Southhaven, MS) He is very good and won't screw up your radio. All the old "freight haulers" swear by him. I have never used him, but I know a bunch of guys who do and have been very happy with him over the years. (he is "time tested") I also know that the tech I take my radios to says he is very good also, and he doesn't dish out praise unless it is warranted.

I wouldn't think killing the RB and "talkback" would not cost much. (you can turn the RB off on most radios, I'm not sure about this model though. Usually if you turn off the "echo" the talk back goes off also, might try that.)

Call the Petro in W. Memphis, they probably could tell you the number. If you check your SWR, check in on Ch 1, 20, & 40. If it is under 2:1 you would be good to go. It wouldn't hurt to try and adjust it lower if you wanted to. I would just because I like mine as low as possible.

The old Peterbilts had a good ground, I'm not sure about the new ones. I haven't driven one since 1998. If you're sure your coax is good and your antenna stinger is at the proper length (check directions). Then your problem is a lack of a good rf ground. I would try some bonding with braid straps. You can also use coax in a pinch, but it's not as good. (solder all connections and solder the center conductor to the braid when you put the connectors on.)
Keep your runs short, about 18 inches. Run one from the antenna bracket to the door frame, from the door to the body, form the body to the frame. You should see some improvement after doing this. A big, wide, flat braid strap works the best. Everywhere you make a conncection make sure you make it to bare, shiny metal. (paint over these places after making your connections.)
