You're are not in legally if you concealled a criminal history to do so. Could be stopped for something as simple as a roadside sobriety check and have your licence run, then its off to see a judge!

Now mind you the offense may be over ten years old and you may be deemed rehabilitated and you may not need a ministers approval of rehabilitation because of how old the offense is but it is still up to the discretion of the border immigration official if they feel like letting you in or not. Even if you did pay the money to get the ministers approval they can still turn you around if they feel like it.
A. Convictions/offences outside Canada
If you were convicted of or committed a criminal offence outside Canada, you may overcome this criminal inadmissibility
- by applying for rehabilitation, or
- you may be deemed to have been rehabilitated if at least ten years have passed since you completed the sentence imposed upon you, or since you committed the offence, if the offence is one that would, in Canada, be an indictable offence punishable by a maximum term of imprisonment of less than ten years.

This thread has been an interesting read. What I get out of it is that the border guard can deny entry to a foreigner simple because they want too. I often had difficulty getting into Canada but was always eventually admitted because I was born here and that gives me a special pass card. The best advise I can give is not to make fun of the border guard. Apparently comparing his ###### to my mothers drapes is not a smart thing to do. And laughing at a 100Lbs lady border guard attempting to move a 250Lbs sack of coffee beans won't win you points either.
