I was reading the posts about Willis Shaw and I am of the opinion that they have to be written by a recruiter and not a truck driver.. My husband has worked for them for several years... His experience has been that Willis Shaw is the same as any other big company. These are his gripes....
1. Loads...like all other companies, they have gone to shorter runs... You pick up a load one day, drive 300 miles and deliver the next day, then if you are lucky you get a 500 mile load that delivers the next day...800 miles in 4 days.. Then you might get a load on thursday that goes 700 miles but does not deliver until the following Monday... hmmm do the math... 1500 miles a week...Yet a trainer will get over 2000 miles a week training a new guy.. and then Willis Shaw gets the recruitment incentive from the government, and the older experience drivers are getting shafted..Willis Shaw is more into recruiting trainees then they are in being fair to their experienced drivers..
2. Trucks maintainance...They do not keep their trucks in tip top shape.. and my husband was told he would have a better truck within 2 years of employment with a apu unit.. Hasn't happened yet, He is still on the list and watching new drivers come in and they are getting better trucks with the promised APU Units....
Good decent running trucks and the miles are two of the most important things to most drivers...
3. also don't believe it when they say you can idle and not abuse it... Think if you idle over 45% they start sending you messages telling you not to idle... It does not matter to them if it is extremely hot or cold...Dispatchers sit in their office there with air conditions running so cold you need a jacket on to stay warm, yet they don't care about their drivers comfort...
4. Benefits/pay... Lately a pay check on an average week is 500 to 700 dollars a week, 5 to 8 weeks at a time. and the insurance is too expensive to pay...you can only enroll in December , but you can't afford it... So don't let them soft soap you..
Willis Shaw is not the worse company to work for.. but like all the other big companies they are all focused on that government incentive...so drivers come and go.. They don't worry about it.. They got a fresh batch of unexperienced drivers coming in to take the experienced drivers .
place.
Their drivers are lucky if they can pay their road expenses and home expenses.. What it costs to keep going down the road is a problem.. You will get reimbursed for tolls, weighs and other expenses, but you better hope you got the money in your bank to pay the home bills first..They don't care how much money you got sitting in your bank account, whether you got the money to fill up the reefer fuel. etc.. That is not their problem, their only concern is getting you a load. Once the load is dispatched, it is all on you
So if anyone is out there waiting to get into the trucking industry.. The companies are all the same..They are going to promise you hometime, better times ahead, become a truck driver and the open road is in front of you, they are going to say what they think you want to hear...Been a trucker's wife for a long time now.. Wish my husband had gone into some other form of work, at least he would be home every night... and we would have a better idea of weekly pay.. the miles are not always a lot..
WSE (Willis SHAW) not all that great

Ol' Willie Shaw the chicken haulers. At least that's what they called them many years ago. When I was looking to change a few months ago, I called them. Wasn't impressed.

Really? Say it ain't so!
Bottom line is, you want hubby home all the time. I know how you feel. I was an Army wife for several years. However, he loved his job. I supported him in his decision to re-up his enlistment. Seems to me, if hubby is still working for WSE, you might be biting the hand that's feeding you.tdcanterbury67 Thanks this. -
They're part of COMCAR. I worked for CCC Transportation in FL for many years, they're ultra cheap. Stay away.

Well written post, probably a fair critique. Nice work!

45% idle time is very generous hubby should easily be able to stay cozy if he would make a few habit changes.

Worked for MCT, which is another COMCAR owned company. WSE and MCT pull each others trailers. My driving instructor had 30 yrs of OTR and was being paid 30cpm. You have a lot of freedom if you drive for the right owner, but forget about decent pay and benefits. I make more in my current regional route, working 3-5 days a week than I did doing OTR for them, and I have health insurance.

I was a willie chicken driver in the 90's. I understand the Boise dispatch isn't there anymore. what about Auburndale? Does everything come out of Elm Springs now?

Yep. They closed down Atlanta too.
