Would you sit around at the company dispatch office for 24 hours, away from your family and home, for free? These people are not out there for the fun of it, or for kicks, they have bills to pay and mouths to feed.

I understand that to the full extent. Why are drivers out there if it's not "PAYING THE BILLS"? I read so much about how the job they're doing isn't doing this or doing that or gettingthe job done... well, then find another job? But then you get the response, "Well, no one is hiring." There ya go... not many places are doing much better. If you have to wait for work, you wait for work. If being away doesn't work for you and the money isn't good enough for you, then find something closer to home that will pay the bills and feed your family. But then again no one is hiring. So stay in the truck? But then you're away and it's not paying well enough... its kill-kill in the industry right now. There are few winners.
For the question - If it was in my job description, I would have to. Either that, or quit and find something more suitable for me.
Also, the company can't take a load that isn't going to pay them after they pay for fuel and then pay the driver. Wouldn't that eventually put the company under? If the company can't make money off a load, then there's no job for the driver. The only logical thing to do right now is wait for the load that pays the company so they can pay the driver and keep that driver in the truck. -
What a load of BS. You would not work one hour without compensation and no decent company would let you. Only someone that doesn't have a conscious would feel like you do. We have labor laws in America that protect all workers from that kind of abuse, well almost all workers truck drivers are excluded. Truck drivers are sub-human, they are cattle.
How is being a modern day slave O.K because of the recession. The excuse that trucking can't afford to pay truckers for their time is ridiculous. Name one other business were the they don't compensate employees and say it's because they can't afford it, thats insane and illegal. If you can't make enough money to pay truckers for their time then close your doors.
Truck drivers are looked down on by their employers, the D.O.T., the shippers/Receivers, the motoring public, and each other. You can work 40 hours a week for free if you want to it's no skin off of my back but don't expect me to do it. I have my dignity and self-respect thats why I would not drive OTR anymore.antoinefinch, bigblue19 and jcroom76 Thank this. -
waiting a day for a load makes someone a bad company. have you read the paper or saw a news program lately. worst economic times since the great depression. what a crybaby. freight is slow.
are your checks cashing?
do they fix your truck?
home time?
screwing with you over nonsense?
this is the trucking business, stupid. man up, put on your big boy britches and go to work. not enough freight, search out another company to your liking.LouisvilleSlugger Thanks this. -

ya'll need to drive for schneider. I never did wait. They at one time had two loads already waiting for me before I even got one done. I never did sit. They will run you crazy. Respects their drivers and they have the best technology in their trucks. Built in gps units. Their main thing is safety. If the road conditions are too dangerous they want you to wait. They want you to drive only when you feel like it is safe to do. But schneider hauls anything and everything so they have loads like crazy.
