Hey everyone I'm Jerome, and I am 38 here searching for infromation on becoming a truck driver. I currently have little back ground in trucks, but have always wanted to drive one for a living. Due to hard times, and my job I thought this would be the best chance to get my CDL. I am not totally sure if life on the road is for me anymore as I worked on the road for 14 years. I figured with the economy, and construction being slow I would see where I can go with this. Thank you for your time, and comments.
New, and looking for advice

Welcome to the forums, Jerome. Good luck with the career change - trucking is a great choice.

Welcome to the forum Jerome.
People who go into trucking as a last resort usually don't fare well as they already set themselves up for failure. Hope this isn't your situation.
Again... Welcome! -
No this isn't alast resort for me. This is just the place, and time for me to get my license. I have some time right now, and spent almost 14 years working on the road a big chunk of that was the railroad. I spent anywhere from 3-7 months away from home, and loved being on the road. I got married is why I got off the road, and now I am not married. I was originally going to get my truck driving done back around 1994 after I was discharged from my military service. Well that did not come around due to a job I could not pass that fell infront of me. The last 6-7 years I have been self employed, and have made a decent living, but it has also been a rough one as I tend to work alone. I have always wanted to do this if not for a short time, but have wanted to make it a life long career. At my age anything could affect me making it in this industry, but right now work is slow, and the time is right to make a change. I am not pushing for a job right out of school due to my lack of experience, but am hoping there is one out there. Thank you for your replies.Gears Thanks this. -
Well you should "push for a job right out of school because that CDL has a shelf life of a few months before you will be required to take a refresher class. The insurance cos. require this so don't get your cdl unless you intend to use it right away.

Thank you for the advice, and yes I will be looking for a job, but have heard horror stories of truckers who take the job no one else wants. I do not want to get myself into this poisition, but I will be looking for anything even if it means I have to work 24/7 365 for the first couple years. If you have any advice as to what trucking companies that are good for someone just getting out of school I would be greatful. I have been doing alot of research, and really haven't found anything so far. I have found alot of people who have taken their first job, and hated it, but none that have really said hey this is these are the best places for someone to start out. Thank you for your time, and responses. -
If someone mentioned a carrier that was good to start out at all the students reading the post would apply there and lessen you chances of getting a job . Just keep reading the forums and see how trainees going to different carriers are treated .

Welcome Lukodath, you will find this forum very helpful and informative. Do your research, talk to other drivers... IMHO you will only know if this is for you 6 months after you start trucking.
When I got my CDL went straight to Roehl Transport cause I thought that was a good company with good safety record and good trainers, and good equipment, etc, etc.... But got one awful trainer, abusive, who made my life "hell" and lied to company to get me dismissed.... But I was determined to give it another try because I really liked living on the road, in a truck, constantly moving... Went to another company.... Had an unfortunate "incident" during orientation and wasn't accepted. But that just reinforced my determination that I REALLY wanted to succeed. Went back to CDL school, took a refresher and then went to another company that everybody says it's not good for several reasons... but I felt very welcome, had a good trainer and after 6 excrutiating months teaming with several team partners became solo, got into a dedicated account with a wonderful load planner, great dispatcher and other things that I am very thankful for and not ready to go anywhere else so far. I LOVE the road, this is REALLY my passion... So, I would tell you, you don't know if you don't try.... Look for a community college instead of a CDL mill (if possible). Good luck to you.
Gears Thanks this.
