As operators of commercial vehicles, can we carry guns for self defense? As for me, I have a CWP. Does this make it legal to carry in my truck?

I've been wondering this question also,
but i'm pretty sure that the answer is a big NO -
CWPs are valid only in the state in which they are issued. Some states do not allow you carry a concealed weapon at all. Some places only allow you to transport them to and from a gun range, unloaded in a locked container, in a non-passenger compartment. Furtermore some cities (and mayeb some states) do not allow you to possess handguns at all, even in your own home (Washigton DC for one). So, you can only carry your handgun only on runs within any states for which you have a CWP, but BE AWARE that some cities within that state may not allow you to carry it at all. If it's a long gun, it is less restrictive, but some states do not alow you to even carry those, except unloaded in a locked container in a non-passenger compartment. Possibly some places won't even allow that without a permit. In some jurisdictions violation of these laws are felonies. My suggestion: DO NOT CARRY A GUN. If you're robbed, give up whatever they ask for, If your load is jacked, get out and let it go. Don't blame me, I didn't make the rules, but these are the rules in many places.

Its a very gray area. The only thing to say is dont. If they tried to jack the truck, I would be very cooperative. Here's the air lines, don't forget to cut the sat, and rip out the trailer gps.

Hubby opted to taking the dog with him instead of a gun. He had him trained to circle the truck and check for people hiding. If anyone knocked on his door or messed with his truck, that dog went nuts, hair standing up on end. It deterred a lot of people from messing with his truck.

I was told in CDL school that it is a federal law that you are not allowed to carry a gun in a commercial vehicle. and I believe no weapon of any kind. so no knife for instance.
-
Most knives are only classed as weapons when they are used as such otherwise they are tools, just like anything else that can be used as a weapon. I dont think there is any federal law that restricts firearms in a cmv (truck). I also think (so take it for what its worth) that you can "transport" a firearm through most states without a CWP and it has to be transported according to that states laws, unloaded, broke down, etc..., I dont know about city or county laws supersceeding state law, but...I dont know. Then there are those silly states like Tom said that dont allow any firearms, but if your truck is your home that could be a whole different ball of wax. Most companies that I have ever heard of do not allow firearms. Alot of shippers and receivers have posted signs saying no to firearms. Anyway as far as I know there is no federal law that says its illegal to carry in a truck.

The nexus of the nife question is blade size and how it opens, if it's not a fixed blade. It differs from state to state, but in most states it's considered a weapon if the blade length is a minimum of 4" through 7", depending on the state and usualyy if it opens automatically (switch blade or retractible spring loaded) it's considered a weapon.
The truck as your home argument is an nteresting one, but I don't think it's like a ship (vessel) that is considered the turf of the flag it flies under. I do know people who live in RVs full time and have firearms. I don't know if they are breaking the law in certain jurisdictions or not. One that I know is a retired Admiral, so I woldn't want to be the cop to tell him he can't. -
You are correct Tom as to the size and manner in which they open and which state you are in, its all varried and there seems to be no constant among most states except certain things like switchblade, balisong, consealed, etc. Its pretty interesting to read that "x" state bans this but "y" state right next door says its legit.

Thanks for the replies. It makes no sense that a law abiding truck driver can't carry a gun or knife to defend him or herself. A knife that is under 4" is pretty much useless for defense. I'm going otr for the 1st time in my life, and I don't know what to expect out there.
