Fleet air filters...anyone use them?

If they were external filtered trucks with twin filters, they probably didn't show much increase and if they have basically a stock aero truck with a low HP motor that does not require alot of air, probably didn't show much either.

Mine is a 550 hp Cat 3406E that has the Pittsburgh Power ported/polished/coated exhaust manifold with larger turbo, Pittsburgh Power Box on level 1, the FASS and dual Walker Megaflow Mufflers that require more air flow that the stock OEM paper filters chokes down in my aero truck with the one filter underhood filter box.

You can hear and feel the difference in throttle response with the Fleet Air Filter over the stock OEM paper filter.

I bought mine at MATS this year and ran it for 2 weeks on my dedicated runs and swithed back to the paper filter for 1 week to double check the difference that was a 3/10ths to 4/10ths difference on my dedicated runs.

 

I'm using K&N, a different brand with a full flow Pittsburgh Power muffler. Today this Columbia turned a 9.6 mpg average from Jackson, Ga to Macon, Ga and to Bristol, Tn. 25,000 lbs in the trl- MBE 4000 and a "Smartshift" trans. (They are NOT smart).

Most fuel mileage gains are technique and conditions. Keep the driver's door closed, keep rolling and slow down.

High flow air filters are worth the effort but they don't fit everybody. If you don't care about mileage or power, don't bother- they are higher maintenance than stock and more expensive.

I realise this is a sales pitch for a product. I have dyno'd a lot of trucks, with the air inlet attached, and with it removed, with the exhaust attached and with it removed. Air does not make power. The turbo can only put out a certain amount of air. If you add extra air it would have a cooler exhaust, that would have a lower drive pressure.
I have dyno'd trucks with and without mufflers, trucks with an exhaust back pressure of 2 inches mercury run the best, that is how they are built for. You know those silly engineers that grind the Cam. Not the really smart guy selling you an air cleaner.
An engine is an air pump with the right amount of air and fuel added, adding extra air it takes power to compress it, that is friction HP, and you end up with lower exhaust temperature, Lower exhaust temperature gives you lower drive pressure, which gives you lower Boost pressure.

 

The air box with stock filter on my 770 Volvo is very restricted due to the filter size does not allow much air around inside the filter box. The Fleet Air Filter is smaller around to allow more room for air to go all the way around filter along with the foam is less restrictive.

The guys with Volvos should know what I am talking about when they open the filter can and see how little room is between the filter and the filter can it is in.

Acts like a restrictor plate in NASCAR by choking down air volume into turbo.

I don't know how big around the K & N Filter is for the Volvo, but if it is same size it will have same problem or worse if it is bigger around.

 

Sounds logical ...I'm going try it especially since I plan to order the mega flow . I don't like the PP muffler

 

You'll have to Google K&N, just Google "K&N filters for commercial trucks", it should lead you right to it.

Here are filter part numbers for a 2005 Columbia (MBE4000):
Donaldson brand air filter: P527682
K&N brand air filter: 38-2012S.

This filter's washable, has a three year guarantee and you'll need K&N's cleaning solution to wash it out with. I took this filter part number to an Autozone store and they ordered it, took 3 working days to arrive. Cost about $160.00

I'm satisfied with it.

 

I had one on my Columbia, and I got a 3/10 increase. Agree that it is necessary for the underhood air filter but not so much for the twin outside cans.
