Howdy,
I have a leak on the cover closest to the starter. I would like to take it off, replace the gasket & seal it back up.
Anything I should be aware of before I pull the cover? Would hate to take it off & have something go flying.
N14 Red Top.
Thanks for the help!

Yah, that is a cam follow cover. Nothing to be messing with if you don't know. Not for beginners.
Working Class Patriot Thanks this. -
listen to heavyd...do not touch those things unless you want to be screwed. Go talk to a Cummins mechanic. It's a whole process as the gasket thickness controls your cam timing and you can't just pop those covers off.

Ha Mate
Those covers will not come off with out the removal of quite a lot of other parts. I have had a problem of the bolts holding the covers on have come loose or come out all together, just run a spanner over the bolts first to check if they are loose. -
Pop off the covers and the thickness will be stamped right into the old gasket, replace with same!
-
Before you pop off, remove top and pushrods.
its a little more complicated than just popping them out and replacing them. I've done them on 2 of our trucks. -
As was stated if you have never seen it done and know the proper procedure, and the little tricks learned from experience. Leave it alone. Do tighten the bolts. 35 ft lbs.
-
Tighten the bolts and power wash the engine and see how bad the leak is.
-
Fair enough, but the appropriate replacement gasket an easy thing to find. Thats what i was trying to say.
-
Thanks...
I will tighten them up & see how it goes. It's hardly leaking, but a leak is a leak.
