As far as OS permits, do I have to have paper copies with me? Or can I have it emailed to me and just show that I have an electronic copy?

Most states require you to have a paper copy with you that you have signed. In Alabama they require you to sign your permit in red ink the reason is that they want you to read your permit and the explicitly state read ink in the provisions.

    Ops85 and kajidono Thank this.

They must be in hand or readily available to be in your hand and signed if they have the line for it (most do) . Alabama is very specific about that red ink and better have it. I just hauled an OD load and went through this

Printed, buy cheap printer and some extra black cartridges, don't forget to get the provision sheets, some states require them with the permit.

Depends on the state. Ohio allows permits to be faxed/copied ect where KY requires the original. Watch your butt nothing makes a DOT officer happier than being able to void a permit for something ignorant. (like signed with the wrong color ink in some states, we all know how dangerous that can be)

No states that I know of will just let you read it off the computer.
Like the others have stated you need to print it out. Also sign it if required.
Wa. state this year allmost busted me for not having printed permit.
My laptop died tha morning, but I had old. permit. Same rtes.
Well I get stopped and he asks where is your permit?
Show him the valid permit off my moblie
I explain what happend. He said not my problem, Well I used my pilot car's laptop and printed it out and signed it. Got a written warning no valid permit..

    kajidono Thanks this.

I had em faxed to me. Guess it's worth it to get some ink for my printer. This whole thing is because North Dakota just changed some of their permits. You guys might want to check that you have the right ones if you run up there. ND and SD are crawling with DOT. I dunno who poked the hornets nest but they're everywhere.

I picked up an oversized shippment from Philadelphia going to Miami.
2 p.m on a Friday Maryland scale house shut me down for the weekend til 9 a.m. Monday morning. Permit says in small print which I read "no travle through a toll plaza after 12 p.m on Friday" I told the scale house that there is no toll on the southbound! Doesn't matter, they call the southbound side a "toll plaze" even if there is one on the other side of the interstate.
In Florida, the scale house asked me to hold up my oversized permit out the window before getting the green light.
