I ran on elogs while back for a short time and it was no big deal.After the initial hassle of getting to know it. They say it has a 15 minute loop built in it if you run out of time to find a place to park. And that if you go under 25 mph it wo'nt register truck as moving like trying to crawl to truckstop or moving around shipper.Personally I like paper I'm not ready to be a communist yet.

I ran the same loads with the same time constraints on paper while at Prime. The stress level of having constant surveilance was not there.

I should have my house paid off by Christmas next year. I will then pocket all my income the following year and call OTR quits. I'll work 2 days a week in the summer running gravel and maybe I'll go back to restoring cars for fun/profit

This may have been mentioned but I think E-logs are a crock. I have violated the HOS letter of the law but not he spirit of the law. The law is about safety and fatigued driving. If I drive for 8 hours and decide I need to stop and take a couple hour nap or want to get a shower and something to eat before finishing my day then I do. The 10/14 hour rules are abitrary at best. You have to assume the 10 hour break assumes your going to sleep 8 hours and spend the other 2 doing whatever else you need to do. How is it unsafe if I happen to take those 2 in the middle of my day then run down the road and get my 8 hours of sleep? Also the BS of "your circadian cycle" is just that. In a perfect world you would always start your day at 7am and be done by 9pm for your 10 hour break and stay on your 24 hour cycle but the real world doesn't work that way. I do not like to drive between 2am and 4am if I don't absolutely have to. I know I am less safe during those hours. If that means that I bend the rules to be SAFE then I do. The bottom line is that e-logs have as much to do with safety as what color socks you're wearing. They are designed for the lowest common denominator in this industry. By the way, the 6 years I have listed on my info is total over the road time, I have held a CDL for 20 years with ZERO accidents and one over axle weight ticket in that entire time including my personal vehicle. I think I am extremely safe on the road and I resent some dufus government fool that never drove a truck telling me what is safe.

I am one the noobies mentioned although I drove trucks 25 years ago.I went to school and got my CDL A.I started working with a company that ran E-logs (Werner) and now working for a company that uses paper(CTL).I have mixed feeling on e-logs they have some good points and bad.One of the good point is they make it easy to keep up with hrs.left on your 70,14,& 11.Also if you get stoped for a DOT inspection most of the time they just want to see the screen showing that.I did have a few issues with them in the 5 months I ran solo after training.the first was a rookie mistake when I forgot to change my duty status to line 3 when I started out in the morning.The e-log backs you up 15min for a PTI automatically,on this day it actually backed me up 30 min and put me violation.The other violations were caused by the qualcom not having signal and putting me on line 3 once and line 4 another time after I had gone to bed for the night.Was able to get them corrected but only after calling the log dept.and wording the message for the correction exactly like they wanted it.
The company I am now working for has a standing policy that they will never ask you to falsify your logs and to just log it as it happens.
As to the issue of working on the truck..the company hired me to drive not be a mechanic.that being said I will change out lights as every driver should know how to do that.As to changing out fan belts and hoses I will wait for a mechanic.I will not be adjusting the brakes as I am not certified to do that.If they aren't right get it fixed before you leave the terminal.I the trailer brakes aren't right when you pick it up let the maint.dept know.
I do resent all newbie being lumped as "steering wheel holders"every driver out there on the road was a newbie at one time whether they went to a CDL school or learned from someone in the business.It doesn't make someone a better or worse driver.Injun and scottied67 Thank this. -
Who is going to decide when these logs are accurate and when they are not? What about computer glitches? What about the dead spot areas? How many tickets do i get before someone decides to have the accuracy checked? Just happened to notice nothing has been said about these things.

Having an electronic system determine if, I am in violation, or doing something i am not supposed to is unacceptable. I can not control what the e-logs record, And i am not going to put myself in position were i am basically handing any violations out on a silver platter. With paper i can control what i want seen and known. Any one who says they have never had to violate hos in one way or another is, full of it. In my opinion with a paper log its always your word against whoever is disputing yours, while a simple computer glitch program error, or a continous no signal for several hours is recorded and there is no way to dispute that with out some
skepticsm.

If you have a phone with GPS it can be used to verify your paper logs . More is seen than what you realize .scottied67 and volvodriver01 Thank this.
