As long as your not using it in commerace you don't need to stop at scales is what I was told when using my semi to pull my 45 foot 5th wheel. Did have one NM trooper come out of Raton scale at 2am pull up next to me than turn around though.

The best way is to have magnetic signs, and then take them off when not in use.

I wouldn't cover the numbers . A commercial vehicle is a commercial vehicle even when used off duty . What type of registration do you have ?
Whether you run across the scales depends on the state .
I'd ask the DOT of each state where you run in . What our opinion is doesn't matter . Inspector's opinions vary .0000

You can cover up the information on the truck and not be in any trouble. It does not meet the definition of a commercial vehicle, since it is not being used in the production of income when used personally.

You are not in a commercial venture when used personally. The DOT might pull you over and ask, and a simple explanation answers it.

That's like a one ton dually (Chevy 3500) right ? Plenty of them, personal vehicles running down the highway, not getting pulled over.
