Gay trainers/trainees.

Give me Break! Gay people actually exist? Whats this world coming too?

 

I come from a time when the word "gay" was a perfectly legitimate word with positive connotations. Example: "My family and I recently went on a cruise and had a really gay time". Hasn't been but about thirty years or so since the homosexuals appropriated a perfectly good word, I think to maybe make their behavior seem less onerous. Interestingly, over the last few years the word has taken on some negative meaning among younger people with whom I'm acquainted, such as describing something substandard as "that's really gay!".
Personally, I feel that if someone is a homosexual then they should describe themselves as such and not try to make themselves seem more acceptable to the general populace by using phony self-descriptive terms such as "gay". Bottom line is if I as a trainer found out that you were a homosexual, you'd be getting out at the next Greyhound station.

Well, Robbie...as you've already seen in this thread, there's a whole big ugly mess of homophobia in this industry. I'd say the best advice is to put on your butch face (ie; "pass") as much as possible, learn as much as you can, and just remember that there's light at the end of the tunnel. Once you learn the ropes and prove you can get the job done, who cares what other folks think.

 

Okay here is my two cents.
When I started out in the Army in 1986 there were many that were dead against the "gay" in the military, we had one that people pointed out as being "gay" though he never came out and said he was. They gave him a blanket party one night and assaulted him with a poolstick on a pool table in the rec area, I am hoping those involved spent time in Leavenworth. Next thing I am getting to is like the army, we are a brotherhood, even a team as we all make sure that load gets to the receiver in one peice safely, we look after each other, we dont care who that other guy on the radio is when we tell him "Hay it's clear to get over buddy" , or " You have intermittant lights". Couple things that I do not have tolerance for is discrimination. By race color creed or sexual preference. That is the base values that I served my country for, freedom for all. This isnt the 1700's,1800's,mid 1900's. This is the year 2007. If I was a trainer I wouldnt give much thought to what a person was if they got into my truck, in my eyes everyone is an individual. Now if they are just dangerous on the road and not trainable that is another deal in itself. But kicking one out on the road as being a trainer because of discrimination will open you up to all kinds of legal retaliation and for your company as well. If you have problems with it better off discussing with your DM and make arrangements. I cant beleive that anyone would have as much problem with their sexuality or be man enough to protect themselves if they are afraid that they will be acosted somehow by a person with a different sexual preference. If you arent interested in that person than chances are nothing is going to happen, just train and get the job done.
As for the poster I would recommend dont ask dont tell. That was set up in the Army for your safety, it's not meant to keep people quiet or "tied down". It keeps the people that discriminate from hurting you. Just get on the truck to do your job, if you feel you would like a preference you can talk to the company when they set you up with a trainer to make sure you get a level headed person that is cool with who you are. Hopefully your company will know the good from the not so good trainers.

I don't think all gays are that way
I have done contract work in three gay bars and except for one occasion they understood I was straight and left me out of the life style

 

The other problem is how people stereotype, I have worked with many that have different lifestyles.. and they are not all alike. Though when one wouldnt leave me alone I just layed it out.. no harassment in the workplace, you will be terminated. That was the end of it, no problems.
