What companies are using "forced" per diem plan/option?
I know Covenant and Marten are.
What other companies are doing this 'shady' method to pay less SS workmen's comp and unemployment.
I have a bad taste in my mouth from this "forced" per diem...

Schneider does...well, they did just over a year ago....I think it was 12 cents for the first 90 days. then you could opt out of it.

What is s per diem plan?
-
Willis Shaw does. I don't know if this is something Willis Shaw is doing alone or if it is something their parent company Comcar is doing.

At my @#$#@! expense?
I had an injury at work
Workmans comp paid me 66% of my take home
12 week later they tell me per diem does not count so now I owe $3000+ to workmans comp
per diem is about 1/3 of my take home
So workmans comp takes 66% of 66% of my take home (43%)
how am i to support my family of 4 on this when I was injured on the job? -
I do believe this has been beaten to death! The funny thing is those who agree to this ripoff think it's the cats meow! As if they are actually getting something!
I hope that your medical insurance will pick up the balance. Yeah right!
I do believe that now that you see whats happening to you and so many others I would look for a lawyer and sue the company for all the rest of the medical and then try for a RICO suit as they are FORCING you into a money laundering or madoff plan! You now have the proof of just how bad a "paid" per diem is.
If you can a few scans of paper work you have showing where the per diem hurt the workers comp put in this thread can get it locked at the top of the board as proof where these BFI's actually will hurt you when you get injured! You now can help every other driver and maybe close down some of these BFI's by keeping rookies from hiring on with them. I would love to see people like leathers and his ilk gone! You can now show them as thieves and gangsters or the trucking mafia!

I agree. I don't see how the trucking companies can get away with not paying their fair share of social security, just because they are paying driver's their per diem BEFORE taxes are calculated. It's a sort of game that the government could and should easily stop because in the end, the tax payers will pay SSI to retired and disabled drivers whose Social Security benefits fall short of being adequate to live on.
As an owner operator, I use the per diem to reduce my tax burden and give me a head start on my insurance premium, but I still pay into social security at the regular rate. The tax return is a windfall which helps keep the business running. But, my situation is different from a company driver.Rollover the Original Thanks this. -
Any company that forces you to take per diem will beat you in other ways too.
It should be one of a drivers prehire questions when shopping for a new company.NFG and Rollover the Original Thank this.
