In CA you have to take your medical into them every 2 years and you're also supposed to take in the latest one you've had. So if you had a physical at a new job when you were hired you're legally supposed to have that one on file, even if the one they already have on file is still current.

I too got the same letter and called NCDMV,,,Call screener explained to me this is following the Federal mandate to create a National Data Base of Drivers medical status(Much like or in conjucture with CSA2010)
It read something like this they posted on their website;
COMMERCIAL DRIVERS MUST SOON CERTIFY TYPE OF DRIVING, PROVIDE MEDICAL CERTIFICATION INFORMATION Friday, November 18, 2011
RALEIGH Between January 30, 2012 and January 30, 2014, the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles will ask its 320,000 licensed commercial drivers to certify the type of driving they do. Some will also be asked to provide current medical certification information.
With the new requirements by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), DMVs across the nation will begin collecting and maintaining medical certification information from commercial drivers when they apply for an initial or renewal license, or when they transfer a commercial driver license (CDL) from another state. NCDMV began notifying the states commercial drivers about the upcoming requirements by letter this week.
All North Carolina CDL holders must certify the type of driving they perform, outlining whether they drive interstate or intrastate, and whether they fall under exceptions to the requirement for a medical certificate.
For certain commercial drivers, current medical certification information will also be collected, including any applicable FMCSA waiver and skills performance evaluation. Some drivers are exempt from the medical certification requirement.
Most CDL drivers are expected to submit the federally-required information during the usual license renewal process. However, drivers whose licenses were issued before January 30, 2012 and expire after January 29, 2014 will receive a notification letter requesting the necessary information.
NCDMV will also send reminder letters to drivers 30 days prior to the expiration of their medical certificates, FMCSA waivers (variances) and NCDMV waivers."
DriveEZ Money, American-Trucker and Gears Thank this. -
Here in La, we've had to show our "long form" medical exam papers, to renew our license, for years. The "wallet card" won't do.
I just renewed, about 3 months ago, and it's still the same. The lady at OMV just wanted a current long form. Mine was current, but would expire in less than a month. She said that was OK.
AFAIK, there's never been a requirement to submit a medical form during the 4 year license period.Linte_Loco Thanks this. -

In Ct we have to show just the card, they do not want to see the long form. Asked this year when my liscense renewed for 4 years and med card will exspire in 2 what to do the lady just told me to keep it current and they will only want to see it at renewal.

Here in WI, the last time I renewed my license I just had to tell them that I had a valid Med. card. They didn't even ask to see it.

They are creating a federal database of drivers (so much better to find you later, dearie).
Not all states currently have the tech to participate, hence the 2014 goal date. This is the first step towards our best scheme to fund highways, protect the public and ensure safety.
What we can see coming down the pike:
* A federal registry of drivers
* EOBR's and RFID tags to transmit drivers' locations to GPS. EOBR for the truck. RFID in the driver's license.
* Pay-per-mile for the truck.
* 24/7 tracking of truck, load and driver.
* The new federal ID for travel.
First they convince the populace it's about safety, security, and efficiency to constantly monitor truckers. After all, they are the "bad guys" and we need to watch them. THEN, we put the same requirements on ALL vehicles and drivers.
Welcome to the new and improved America. All your movements belong to us.victorville, dunwitit and formertaxidriver Thank this. -
