Hi Folks, looking to get into the trucking industry. I was a flight attendant for over 30 years and took early retirement. Then got into law enforcement as a dispatcher. Now I find myself in California (moved from Texas) and can't find work. Any feedback for me? I am 54 and in good physical condition... I like the idea of being independent and not being micro-managed. For those of you who have been in this career for any length of time, your words of encouragement or discouragement is greatly appreciated. I have contacted Swift for my training but have not signed on the dotted line yet.
New career for a middle aged lady ..truckin?

No reason why you can't do it! You were a flight attendant so being gone from home probably won't bother you that much. It can be quite stressful though. My wife did it and loved it. Took her awhile to get used to it but eventually she did.
Lots of other options out there besides Swift. You don't necessarily have to follow the herd! Personally I would aim for a company that is going to treat you like human instead of a number. I have found in the industry its better to have a personal relationship with your DM instead of them being in charge of a couple hundred drivers. I would do some research and find a company that maybe isn't advertising as much. This means less driver turn over rate which equals happier drivers.

Women in trucking is probably comparable to men as Flight Attendants as far as percentage goes. A lot more in both jobs then 15-20 years ago. I'm sure there are a lot of gals on here to give you good advice from their view point.
I was 38 years with TWA, with a number of years in F/A scheduling and planning. I miss the airline industry, but now I'm in trucking and like it.
Just do your research, reading, talking, and listening so you have an idea what you are getting into.

Thank you so much! I got burned out on flying especially after 9-11. Being a flight attendant is definetely a lifestyle as is driving. Doing my best to get the most info before taking the plunge with any particular outfit.

Not to rain on your parade, but starting out, you'll be highly micromanaged. Especially with the mega carriers. They'll tell you where to go, how to go, when to get there, where to fuel, etc. After you get that magic 2 yr number in tho, lots of possibilities will open up. If you can put up with it, then welcome to the club. Heck, welcome anyway and good luck.

Central Refrigerated is a good medium sized company and they have a schooling program. We drove for them and loved it. That was our experience though. Each person has their own needs and wants. They are a pretty well rounded company though. They haul a lot of freight through your area too.

Go for it, you'll do just fine! Swift is probably as good or as bad as any of the training companies.
