Why not go to TN Tech? $1400 and the lotto will pick up $600 of it. 6 weeks.

I went there and got a full ride from Work Force Essentials. WIA paid for everything. I went in Nashville off Briley Parkway. I graduated December '09.

    United's trucks look like turds.

There are many reasons not to go to TN Tech compared to a private school.

On average, TN Tech has about a 3 to 4 month waiting period just to get in the course. I don't know about you, but when I was unemployed and needed to start working, I didn't have that kinda time to start earning a paycheck.

Secondly, the course is over twice as long as Uniteds. If we started at the same time, I'm already working and with a trainer three weeks before you even graduate. Factor that 3-4 weeks of extra paychecks that I get going to a private schools 3 week course and the cost difference disappears.

Third, getting a job and keeping a job are two different things. Tennessee Techs time behind the wheel sucks, their classes or too crowded and their failure ratio is high. Just talk to recruiters from all the major carriers. The amount of students that get sent home during orientation because they can't drive is much higher than the amount that attended quality private schools.

Fourth, you go to TN Tech, you better hope you're a fast learner. You get two cracks at your CDL test. You fail the second, you're done. You gotta wait another 4 months and pay all over again.

Most private schools will continue to work with students until they get it right. Coupled with the extra behind the wheel time you get through most private schools and the success ratio is much higher.

Fifth, 90% off all the major carriers do tuition reimbursement anyways......so who cares what it costs? I went to a school that let me put $2000 down and finance the rest with no credit check. Then I went to work for KLLM. They paid me $150 a month towards my tuition reimbursement. My finance payments were $145 a month. So none of the money came out of my pocket. At the end of 12 months, KLLM cut me a check to pay off my tuition in one lump some.

So out of pocket was only a few hundred dollars more than TN Tech, I started class 3 days after signing up. I had a job and was at orientation within 4 weeks, I was earning a paycheck in half the time and the entire thing was paid for by the company that hired me. They even paid my licensing, my physical and even interest on the loan.

Lastly the job placement services through most private schools are better.

Sometimes the route that costs less doesn't save you money.

    Selva Thanks this.

TMC I wonder where your info comes from. My class was 9 people.

You come out as a PTDI certified driver. That means Crete will hire you right out of school.

How can time behind the wheel in a 6 week course be less than a 3 week course?

Most people that get a CDL and end up over the road quit within 6 months. They can't handle the life style.

Swift didn't pay all of a friends Road Master school. They have a limit on how much they pay.

I'm not a quick learner. TN Tech was good for that.

The instructors I met from some of the other schools looked pretty strung out, or hung over. Our school did 3rd party testing because the others lost that priviledge.

Our school would have worked with us until we got it right. It wasn't necessary. One guy had to take his a second time.

You have no point of reference.

The only valid point you make IMO is about going out and earning a paycheck sooner.

OK, I'll try and respond in order.

Time behind the wheel. Most of the tech schools are so crowded you dont get the time or the one on one instructor attention. Spend 6 weeks in a tech school with an hour or two a day behind the wheel, then spend 3 weeks in a quality private school that controls class sizes and you will average 2-3 times that a day behind the wheel.

Who cares if most people quit within 6 months? Thats their problem, not mine. Or maybe they had better options to support their family, I dont. I didnt get my CDL to work for 6 months.

SWIFT sucks, Roadmaster is expensive. Of course if you spend $6500 to go to a crappy company that doesnt repay 100% youre gonna get hosed. The average cost on a private school is around $4000. The Average company pays up to $5 or $6000. So your point is non sequitor.

Strung out or hung over? Are you kidding? What crappy school did you go to? Most private schools still do 3rd party testing. No schools lost their privilege except SWIFT....see back to my previous comment, SWIFt sucks. The state of Tennessee put a freeze on NEW 3rd party testers, not suspend current ones. Not only that, Tennessee just lifted their moratorium on 3rd party testers so private schools no longer have to pay for SWIFTS debacle.

I drove team a few months with a guy that went through TN Tech in Nashville that let him test twice. He failed both times and they told him he would have to wait and pay all over again if he wanted to retest. He ended up traveling over to Knoxville to train at a private school that passed him first time out and he was off to work.

No point of reference, I have every point of reference. In the end, the only point of reference that matters is how quick a private school can get you to work. If you have months to wait on a tech school, god bless you....you were in a much better position in life than I was.

I needed to get to work immediately. If I waited on Tennessee Tech I would have been homeless and my son would have been in foster care. I cant go 3-4 months unemployed.

just because a school offers a 150 hour course that is PTDI certified does not mean that Crete Carrier will hire you. Any company that a person is thinking about joining should be contacted first to see if the school is on the eligibility list.
