I'm starting training in December and am currently in Kentucky for Thanksgiving and on Sunday I will be returning to Texas. My question is, is it OK to stop at one of the truck stops between Kentucky and Texas? Somewhere in Arkansas for example and get some information on trucking? Do they have magazines? Could I eat just to see how great the food is at truck stops?
Which are the good ones? Loves? Pilot? Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Loves and Pilots (Peelots) aren't truckstops, they are fuel stops. Stop in Prescott, Ar @ the TA and if you go to the door closest to the truck parking they have the trade magazines there.

Here's a tip for you.
There will be a whole rack of trade magazines, as stated in the earlier post.
Open each one up, and look for a 5-10 page DART advert. Usually near the center. If it has one, toss it.
Take any that do NOT have this ad home with you. And you might learn something. -

This site will offer more info that any magazine you can pick up...volvodriver01, lil may and Lilbit Thank this.

Just go in the restaurant and sit in the truckers area. Nobody checks to see if you are a trucker or not. Then just sit and listen.
Don't trust advertisements. They are glorified and have one purpose. To reel you in like a tuna.
You can find alot of good info here. There might be some conflicting info, but atleast you are getting two sides of the story instead of one.volvodriver01 Thanks this. -
Also get the "truck paper" and other printed reading material. Any place that sells diesel fuel and accomidates trucks is a truck stop. However, some are set up differently, with minimal facilities, like Loves and Pilots VS. Flying "J" and T/A and Petros which have sit down restaurants. Go ahead, use the TV room, restroom and whatever else, because there are no "truck stop" police checking ID's.

Thanks for all of the information everybody! I will be heading back to Plano, Texas from Louisville, Kentucky on Sunday. I saw a TA in Arkansas (exit 260 I believe) so I will go there to get some info.
Starting the academy December 14th. -
Ask a trucker personally. Loves and pilot will do...

If you go into a truck top with a real restaraunt like a T/A or Petro and sit at the counter, it will be hard not to strike up a conversation. If you do this a couple times on your trip, you'll get a pretty good idea of the way of life. After each meal, if you reflect on the conversation, you'll probably come up with questions that can be answered at the next stop.
