Drivers with families miss out on too much the way it is. Holidays should be spent at home.

Only reason I'm working over the holiday is because I know there's gonna be a shortage of trucks on the west coast and the rates are gonna be good. In other words, I'm gonna break it off in my brokers butt:)

My contractors tend to take time off around the holidays. They realize they make their money other times throughout the year, and are more likely to have to do something stupid to get home around the holidays. They are better off to take the time to get home and truck stuff taken care of.

and to hear the dejection in their voices when you tell them no. I could never get those days back and are just some of the things I missed out on.

Agreed, been there...along with ball games, school functions etc. What really burned me up was the indignant carrier demanding things from the comfort of his home and then lacking any compassion for us in the field. Gave new meaning to the term "4Q" for me.

This goes for alot of business not just trucking. When I used to build computers, the sales reps would make promises that were not possible without working holidays and weekends. As the old story goes S&@t rolls down hill.

My first year OTR for Crete back in 08 was rough at Thanksgiving. Spent it in a Dennys with 3 other drivers. I thought to myself, wow this is a lonely profession. That was my first and hopefully last one that I will ever miss.

I now work local for J.B. Hunt on their Home Depot account. Since HD is closed for the day I have the day off :biggrin_25519:

JB pays $140.00 for the holiday but I get an extra $20.00 for the DCS account. So the day off with an extra $160.00....priceless.

I could be wrong, but that seems to me the last time I remember it being done.
