Here's some info . People losing jobs fail to comprehend those lost jobs affect the trucking industry . Manufacturing plants need raw materials going in and finished products going out . Those products quit moving truckers lose jobs .
We all know building construction has slumped . Drivers moving building materials lose their jobs .
Electronics are lighter and more compact each year . Why do you think liquid products are concentrated ? More product on less trucks . More lost trucking jobs .
People keep losing jobs . There aren't any new jobs in the industry . There is no help for that just because people want to be truck drivers . Look at the numbers for transportation occupations in this chart . Note the numbers are thousands so 8,651 represents 8,651,000 . So there were 162,000 less people working in the transportation industry in October this year than October last year . Carriers haven't increased their fleet size . What's happening to all the newbies ?http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t13.htm
Don't ask for advice getting a job in an industry with increasing unemployment .

What does "BFI" mean? I think I might know the what the "F" stands for, but I don't know what the rest of the acronym stands for, and may be wrong about the "F"!

Bottom Feeder Inc. Companies constantly hiring trainees because no self respecting experienced driver would put up with their abuse . They thrive on desperate newbies that went to CDL mills because they were about to lose everything and will do anything to keep a job . Eventually the mental and physical strain is too much and they leave anyway .
The Gryphon Thanks this. -
See, I was even wrong about the meaning of the "F"! -

going into trucking is a gamble at best for most people as only 2% of people that get into trucking make it a year before they run away from trucking.
IF you can make a career out of trucking, and keep your record clean and make smart decisions at to what you do and who your doing it for you can make allot of money in trucking.
If all you wanna do is drop 'n Hook, no touch freight running the cruise on the interstate all day, you wont make a whole lot, as a rookie out of school can do that and for allot less then a exp driver can......

I'm looking into doing this because I can't afford a regular school to get a different degree and noone around is hiring. I also have a perfectly clean driving record along with background I know what I'm getting into my mom and dad were both truck drivers. This isnt a choice if I want my son and husband to stay afloat I have to do something my husband got hurt at his job and with a 2 year old on workers comp pay it just doesnt cut it. The only places hiring around here are hard labor jobs and even those want you to have experience. Which me being 23 and only having a handful of jobs my whole life I don't have trucking is something I can do to keep my family going and something I can do my entire life. I just need tips on which company would be best to start.

Finding a smaller company that is willing to train you is less risky . Construction is slow but getting a job working off highway , such as in rock quarries is a good start . Industrial cleaning companies need drivers to operate vacuum trucks on site . They never have enough CDL drivers and may train you .
Moving companies are another possibility but this is their slow season . They start getting real busy around the end of April -
What do you think about Prime? I`ve talk to many truckers at the TA Barstow Truck Stop and all of them said good things about this company.
