I don't know. It's not like NC doesn't charge enough for a CDL. I paid $220 to renew mine in October 2010 for eight years, whereas my CO license was $35 for five years.

It's a federal thing guys. The Feds are requiring that you produce a valid short-form card when you get your license renewed, and will require that you come back in and show the med card to them the next time you get a medical. I think I read that all of the states have until 2014 (??) to get this program in place.

I had to show my medical card both times (when I renewed my NC CDL and when I switched over to CO), although I haven't had to go back yet. The medical card I used expired in August, but they made me get a new one when I went for orientation with CRST Malone in February.

Its for the 2012-2014 period they will need it,got off the phone with them when i got my letter,,mainly to "clairify that you have right medical endorsements for the particular license that you carry,,they are making a national data base much like CSA2010

That's right, they want enforcement across the country to be able to access your medical certification via your CDL. Once everyone gets in the system over the next 2 years it will be easier; the certifying doctor or your employer will submit the info to DMV

No you dont have too!!Just dont do it have your license downgraded to Class C and start all over again. If you will go to the website on your letter it will explain it in detail and its no big deal and since you have been in trucking 3 yrs you already are aware of the fact that every year you are faced with some sort of new reg that is often a waste of the drivers time and $$$.With this said you being from NC you may have heard of the driver from the Ukraine that wrecked on I-26 killing either 4 or 5 people, guess what he did not have or havent had in 5yrs.You guessed it a medical card and he had numerous things wrong with him disqualifying him as a driver.Thats just one of many reasons these things get started.Anyway I understand where your coming from but most of this stuff we just have to grin and bear it and hopefully alot of this stuff will help keep us and others alive out there on the road.
