To add to what TLea had to say, your post trip inspection is also important. Before I was a driver, I had a chance to ride along with my Uncle for a couple of weeks ... so long ago I don't want to admit it. When we got to the truck stop, I think it was a Sinclaire somewhere in Pennsylvania, there was a huge bolt (looked huge to me, but then I was only 10) sticking out of the sidewall of his driver's side steer tire. If he hadn't been in the habit of doing inspections, (ok, I'll admit it ... it was 1981) even back then during the hey day of the outlaw trucker, it could have ended in another senseless highway tragedy.

Just for those curious, I think he paid $125 for a new steer tire back then. It must have been a lot of money because he didn't stop grumbling about it until we got to Boston.

Am I rambling? Sorry. I'll go sleep now. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. And those of you that were out there doing the job we do best ... bless you and I hope you are with your families and/or friends next year.:biggrin_25514:

    Zyklon,
I am getting my CDL here in Colorado and am thinking about joining Stevens like you are about to do. I would greatly appreciate it if you keep me abreast on your progress and how it goes there in Dallas. How do you handle the fact that you don't live in Dallas? That is my main concern. Where do you park your "rig" once you have one? Where do you go to pick up a load if you keep your rig near your home? Lots of questions and hopefully you will find out some answer and either post here or email me. gwgilbert7 on the big one, AOL. Thanks in advance. gary

    DenaliDad,

I hope to have my CDL before joining Stevens. I don't know how it works when, like me, you live in a different state. How do you get loads? Where is your rig? Do you have to get to Dallas to pick one up? How? Drive there in the rig empty? Pick up a load near the city you live? Lots of dumb questions I know. But being not even worthy of "newbie" status I am confused. What is the best way to find answers?

Where you live makes no difference at all. When you go home, Stevens will get you a load close to your home (wirthin say 100 miles) and tell you where to park the truck. When you come back they will just give you a load somewhere normally close as well. Rarely ever pick up a load at the terminal. Thats the one place you want to avoid lol.

Holidays can be a pain in the butt.
Load is due wednesday. We stopped in Nashville last night hoping for a repower.
This morning, I find out there are 9 other trucks around me that have 'too much time' on their load, hoping for the same repower.
    So we're heading into Maxton.
Hopefully they'll take the load early.
The worst part is there are no decent truck stops nearby to wait. I think the closest is South of the Border.
Now if I could find a golf course...

Agreed with the holidays thing. I was on a 4 day meat run from Dakota City, NE to Houston, TX. I would've been there 2 days early, but it also afforded me the opportunity to spend Thanksgiving day with some family in Dallas and still make the OTD. Now I'm on a 2 day banana run to CO. Ports suck horribly btw.

    Hey guys,

Sitting here in Dallas waiting to start OR2 Monday. Ended up with just under 12000 miles in first phase. Loving the life.
Crazy last week I was driving back into the Dallas area and a motorcycle passes me at lightning speed, his buddy two seconds later . As the second passed me he cut hard to the right in front of me to avoid a car in the left hand lane. The highway patrol was right on his tail as well. As soon as this guy jerks in front of me he gets the bike a shaking and he looses control. We happened to be on a bridge, his bike skids to a stop about a quarter mile up the road, he takes one bounce on the surface and bounces right over the side of the bridge. Air flight came in for him, and left without him. They black bagged him right on the street, first crazy event I was a part of on the road. The guys freind never stopped or came back to see what happened to him. The troopers said they clocked him at around 200. True story.
I had to sit there for almost 3 hours while they marked and pictured the entire scene.
The officer was torn up over it, kept telling me he should have backed off sooner, felt bad for the officer in this one.
Guy gets his rocks off going insane speeds on a bike, kills himself, and the officer lives with the guilt of over pursuing?

Be safe out there drivers, eager to get out with my partner. Made it back to the yard and got a room with a buddy from school, eager to put all my new skill set into action.

Wanted to ask the experienced drivers for Stevens what you think of starting out on an extended team. Do you think my partner and I would be dispatched enough miles to make good money. They are really pushing this right now, think there are more guys than trucks at the moment. I know Kenworth is slow to get all the t700's out of the factory right now. Let me know what you think of the idea.
    Thanks,
    Shifty

What Steven's needs to do is to stop hiring all of these people when they don't have enough trucks to put them in. It's not fair to you all. I know the guy that got my grad fleet truck was waiting for more than a week for it. He told me that Steven's kept refusing to get his classmates back to the yard due to the truck shortage. I also heard they are cancelling grad classes. What a mess...

I don't quite know what you mean by the term "extended team," but as a team you all split the pay 50/50. They almost always only let couples team due to the pay split. If you're talking about dumb and dumber, then it's paid $0.30cpm split 50/50 (i.e $0.15cpm per person.) So if the truck runs 4000 miles for the week, that is $300 per person gross. Now, if you drive 2800 miles that week and your partner only drives 1200, but gets paid the same as you...then that's not very fair. Hence the "only couples should team" mentality.

Does Stevenstranport allow new drivers to bring their dog with them in their assigned truck?
