They are if you want to haul freight. An MC# is your authority to haul freight. If you are leasing to a company then you would be operating under their MC#.

You are no longer required to display the MC number on the truck . The DOT number provides that information . You must have motor carrier authority to haul for hire .

Intrastate, and exempt commodities do not require an mc#

There are a number of states that do require state authority for hauling intrastate. California and Texas are two of the larger ones. However, not all states require intrastate authority.

Correct, but, the op was asking about an MC#, which is fed., you are talking state now. So, no matter what TX and those other states say about intrastate transport there, you still don't need an MC#. Sure, you may need a txdot#, but, that's not an MC#.

You need an MC number if you plan on engaging in interstate commerce. In other words, you pick up a load in one state and deliver in a different state. To be legal you will need to have your own authority (MC number) or lease to a carrier who has authority (MC number). The only time you need intrastate authority is when you pick up and deliver in the same state. It is a moot point if the state doesn't require intrastate authority.

If you are hauling goods or freight for hire, you need a federal MC# (California MC# is different program and is for Intrastate, not Interstate and only for CA based companies). If you are a "private carrier"...meaning you are carrying your own equipment, such as a construction company hauling their own backhoe to and from a job, you do not need a federal MC#. If you were paid to haul the backhoe for the construction company interstate, you need the MC#.
