Okay thought I would see if someone might have some ideas for me. I bought a 99 peterbilt 377 with a 3406E CAT engine serial # 1LW20391:biggrin_255:. I filled up the passenger side tank completely and was going to run on it. Switched the toggle to passenger tank and ran out of fuel within 4 miles. Got under the truck and can not find a fuel shutoff valve anywhere? There is a valve on a crossmember that has my fuel lines running into and out of it(kind of like an air valve)no shutoff. Would this valve be my problem? Maybe gummed up. Can I just take the valve off and clean it out or would I need to buy a new one? Or could it be something completly different? I am starting to notice even when I am pulling from the drivers side acts like starving for fuel. My check engine light comes on and then the truck starts to die. After she dies you can crank all day long and there just isn't any fuel. Any and all info is greatly appreciated. Thanks:biggrin_25514:. Just trying to save a buck.

That switch is just for the fuel gauge... it does NOT switch from tank to tank...

That valve you see (usually above the transmission) is the 'splitter" valve... it is supposed to make sure fuel is drawn equally between each tank.

Monday I am changing all of my fuel lines... they are 17 years old. I have been having some problems with the right tank not drawing all the fuel out of the tank... ran out twice this summer trying to sneak home with low tanks. I am also changing the valve... you would be wise to do the same. I'll take some pix...

My son is running a '97 377 and redid all of his fuel and air lines this year.

Thank you for the helpful advise. Sometimes you just have to ask for a hand. I tapped on the "splitter" valve with a hammer lightly and noticed that both my fuel tanks started going down. I had the truck running earlier and she started to try to die so tapped on the valve and she ran just fine. Thanks for the help. I will go and get a valve tomarrow and have her fixed. Thanks again.

I know freightshakers do run you out of fuel if parked overnight on a low shoulder, with low fuel. Gent had to get fuel trucked in. Maybe the same with Petes.

The tank level is controlled by the law of gravity, it will aways pull out of the tank with the least amount of lift.

The draw line will have a regular T fitting nothing special, the return line has a check valve/equalize.

I would take the hose off at the T fitting and see if there is any debris from the inside of a hose plugging it, if it's clean blow back into the tank to check for resistance, funny things can be floating around in the bottom of the tank and getting sucked up I have seen a shop towel and even cotton seed and it will cause all kinds of problems!

don't ask how they got there?

    Related question:

Don't the tank levels equalize? Fill one tank or the other and pretty soon the fuel gauge reads ½ regardless of which tank was filled? (Assuming near empty when fueling)

Also fuel starvation will not turn on the check engine light.
Did you get the truck plugged into to see what fault was logged?

    Correct
they will siphon across until they are level even if the truck isn't running, faster if it is, that why you can run out of fuel parked on a slanted off ramp when you are low on fuel.

    Injun and volvodriver01 Thank this.

Haven't been able to get to a shop as the first one is 35 miles from me. As the truck starts to die the check engine light kicks on and as soon as I tap on the splitter valve the truck runs just fine and the check engine light goes off. The whole story is as follows.... I bought the truck 3 hours away from home. Picked it up and put $250 in the passenger tank as I thought that is the tank it was pulling from:biggrin_25524:. Drove about 48 miles and she died and would not fire. Realized I wasn't getting fuel so primed the filter and went on down the road about 10 miles and shut off again. This time I finally realize that I still have a full passenger tank and an empty drivers tank. Wrecker brings out 10 gallons of fuel so I can get to station. Give him $157 for his service and get another $145 worth of fuel and put into the drivers side tank as I am able to pull fuel from this tank. Get back to the house just fine. Everytime the truck was shutting off the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS TRIGGERING. I am going to take the valve off tomarrow and blow it out just to see whats gummed inside. I will probably put a new one on anyways. If this fixes the problem then I will get to a shop and find out what if any codes popped up. Really want to thank everyone for the help. Much appreciated...

The same thing hapenend to me when i bought my 379.The valves at least on mine are on top of the tank.I put fuel on the left side when i picked the truck up and it never transfered over. The valve for both the suction and the return were shut off and before i knew it i was out of fuel. Also check the tank vents if one or both of them are plugged the fuel wont transfer right.
