This is an old thread but you should be able to buy an aftermarket sealed beam projector ( look for size 4x6, 5x7 ect) and what buld temp you want and plug and play. I think you can get the whole set up for under 100 bucks shipped. Better light on the road uses less power and seem to last longer at least 2-3 years maybe longer thats how long i have had some before i switched cars. I have put hid's in everycar i have owned and will never have a regular bulb again.

I wish they were $100. This is about the cheapest I've seen and they're $575. I want to get away from the sealed beams but haven't found a suitable replacement.

What your looking at on flea-bay is the same lights that Grand General sales for about $75 per light depending on where you buy it at. http://http://www.grandgeneral.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=truck_led.tpl&product_id=1568&category_id=49&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=13

The pics aint the best but there the same lights.

Those guys at KC Truck Parts in Spokane overprice their parts big time. Almost every time I go there for something they scare me off with their prices. I was thinking of switching to single rectangular lights, but.................................................................................................

    Too expensive.

And on top of that HID only require 1/7th to 1/10th the power that require headlights use. Like you said, the most they use is the short burst of the arc to light them up. HID have a ballast similar to fluorescent so the existing wiring is not a problem.

United pacific sells hid's also. I bought their clear lens halogen lights and I'm impressed. Lot better light than than the old style.

    Next question.........are they any good?

I agree with Rollin Coal, HID's in a housing designed for halogen is horrible, but in projectors they work great. My wife had an Acura TL with HID's and they were way better than halogens but they were factory projectors. I want to switch because fewer vehicles that use these sealed beams are on the road so they're getting harder to find. I bought a case of them off Amazon.com for $4 each, they're $13+ at a truckstop and most autoparts stores have stopped carrying them.

You can also look into LED headlamps, we cant keep them on the shelves. The only down side to LED is that they dont get hot enough on the face of the lamp to melt ice and snow, so if you run north, they may not be the best. They also come with poly lenses now, so breakage is almost a non-issue.
