My husband (he's somewhere on here) is in school right now and plans to go OTR when he graduates January-ish.
I'm due for our 2nd child April 2nd... my question is, what are the odds that he will be able to get back to be there? Obviously we can't control the timing, but would most companies let him come home?![]()

It would probably help to know what trucking companies your husband is considering getting hired on with. My husband is with Maverick. When he was with his trainer for 7 weeks, he got home for 2 different weekends. This was because his trainer was, at the time, housed in Maryland and we are housed in Arkansas. My husband is going into his 8th week on his own and has been making it home all but one weekend so far. (Yes, my husband is relatively new to the business.) I just looked and April 2, 2012 is a Monday so it might be difficult for your husband to be home on that day because, from what I have observed, if he is under a load on Friday, he will probably need to make the delivery on the following Monday (that is, if he is under a load on March 30, 2012 then he will probably need to make that delivery on April 2, 2012).
My father was an over the road trucker for at least 8 years starting in or before 1977 and ending his over the road career around 1985. During that time, he and my second step mother had 3 children (3 pregnancies) and he only made it home for one of those births. Of course, that was many years ago so things might have changed some since my father's days as a trucker. -
Thank you so much for replying! I think that Snyder is in his top choice and there's also another (sort of local company) in Conover that he would like to work for. Would it be a bad thing for him to ask about how this works before accepting employment with a company? Like when they discuss benefits, etc. - asking about home time and emergencies, etc.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the new forthcoming addition!

Hey, This is spalacio's husband. Thank you all for the welcomes and info we sure do appreciate it! To fill in the blanks a little bit I used to drive a box truck for a private contractor but it had no benefits and didn't require cdl so I am now in CDL school and would love to find a local job and not have to worry about leaving my son and soon to be daughter and wife. However I'm not counting on that I understand a lot of places require OTR exp and while I will be applying to loads of companies local and otherwise. I'm currently looking at OTR companies that hire in NC since that is where we live and as I understand it from some of my research I am much more likely to get home more often if there is a terminal or main hub of the company I work for running out of NC. Therefore even though I've heard good and bad about schneider they are like 35 min. down the road I'm also really hoping for Watkins and Shepard I've heard very good things about them and have talked to them they are hiring and they seem to be the better choice. They are in conover NC and I'm starting my application process. I hope that might clear up some of the confusion. I would like to be local but worse case scenario if I'm OTR for a while to get the exp I need I would like to feel like I have a chance of getting home to my young family. Hope everyone had a wonderful thanksgiving. Will talk to you guys soon. Happy trucking

if you go with Schneider I think since u not having any otr experience u have to do 4 weeks out with a trainer not sure I didn't start with them but just put in some tah on your qualcomm if u start with them also notify your recruiter about the birth of your child before u start as well as directly contact your dbl and schneider also has day cab drivers out of Charlotte don't know if you need 2 years experience for that or not I will ask a local driver when I see one for you congrats and take care
