how much does the stock market effect the industry, i.e. the latest market surge followed by the down turn?

does this cause significantly more/less runs to be made, thus the need for more/fewer drivers?

what significant causes effect these aspects of the industry?

Supercat, just my humble outlook but the trucking industry is directly affected by how the 'market' is performing. Right now, the rate of foreclosures, slow housing sales/starts, overvalued stocks and the collapse of second tier mortgage companies is causing a market correction to take place. In response, the average Joe and Jane is keeping rather than spending their money on home loans, home goods, and other investments. The end result is that their is less calls for consumer goods causing less calls for frate, causing less miles, causing shorter paychecks. It will not last forever (5 years by market analysts) but you should see a rebound starting in about one year. Just my HO.

    Now....about the Mexican drivers!!!

There is also a lag between bad news and empty trucks. It takes awhile for the economic conditions to filter through from consumer to retailer to supplier to manufacturer.

Some products are immune to market conditions, i.e., toilet paper and toothpaste, etc.
