Truth is it does not matter if a person has two year or ten years as a driver before becoming a trainer. As Scooter already said, 160 hrs of training and pass the tests and your a driver. No company has to place any driver as a student or as a trainer. They can hire you, put you through orientation, and then hand you the keys and say go drive. So to every person on here that whines and complains about all us mega carriers with trainers at less than two years, piss off. At least they are making new drivers spend time with someone with at least some experience.

I was enjoying the banter. Both sides make valid points. It's nice having some discussion on here for once.

Do any of you May trainers train drivers out of the Pensacola terminal?
-
yep...best terminal out there!
There's a reason why drivers switch from all other terminals to P-Cola, but not the other way aroundThe Gryphon Thanks this. -
Awesome!! Getting excited about May. Hope I get into orientation Dec 27th!!
-
That's the other reason I quit instructing students. I'm a hard charger and some of them couldn't seem to grasp the importance of getting from point A to point B in a timely manner.

They still let drivers train with only 3 months exp? I hired on with a guy who I stayed in touch with while working for May and to this day still. Sure as #####, after 3 months he was training.......How do you train someone in winter driving when you haven't driven in the winter yourself? Even Swift makes you wait longer!
I lucked out and had a good trainer, overall it was a good company. Truck wise, it was nice to have a 13 speed and all the guages. Also, they ran a solo 48 states. I was outta Brooks and loved going all the way to the other ocean!
I really do miss OTR, everytime I see a May truck there is that little bit of envy knowing that at one point that reefer driver was out East somewhere......Nowadays, being a local driver in the Portland Metro Area......East for me is Troutdale, OR. -
I have driven a truck for 5 years and have owned 2! I've been off the road for 7 years so it will be nice to go out with a trainer/coach. Even a person with 1 year on the road has information to share and new ideas and it would be refreshing to learn about doing things the "May" way instead of weeks of road stories. Don't get me wrong cause if you've been out there forever and I run into you at a truck stop or shipper I will pick your brain also!

Hello Trucker, I have read your post and have some comments. First let me introduce myself.
My name is Stephen Adams. Coach for May Trucking Company and 15 year veteran of the trucking industry.
I have:
- 2 million miles accident and incident free.
- Compete and have won several truck driving championships.
- Been a Ambassador of Americas Road Team,
- Trained hundreds of men to drive truck
- Couldn't list all the trucks I have operated over the years.
- etc.
I often hear these same comments and it just makes me scratch my head with some drivers logic.
I often hear, "The day you think you know everything is the day you should hang up your keys"
Would you agree with that?
Okay then.....
If your always learning then how do you teach lessons you have not learned yet? You experience them together. So...
A coach can not TEACH EVERYTHING that is impossible remember? "the day I think I know everything is the day I hang up my keys" The goal is to work on weakness , and focus on building a foundation they can continue to grow on. The most valued lesson a coach could ever inspire has little to do with trucking, guess what that is? ? ?
To be honest enough with yourself to learn from your experience.
I pay close attention not to over teach skills they already have learned in previous life lessons. (life experience is just as valuable as time behind the wheel as those lessons can also apply directly to trucking.)
Don't confuse time with experience . Time only allows for more experiences to happen, if you don't make a point to learn from your mistakes and the mistakes of others then that is a experience wasted, correct?
More importantly, Just because you have done something for a long time don't mean you do it right. I have seen guys make the same mistake time and time again and because it didn't kill them "yet" it was not a problem to them.
Also and I mean this with no disrespect, if it takes you more then 1 year to "LEARN HOW TO DRIVE A TRUCK" then perhaps this is not the career for you. This is not brain surgery, or remotely complicated if you apply yourself!
Finding a driver with the skill set to teach is not the problem ... the problem is finding a teacher! Their are tons of trainers, The last time I checked you train a dog not a human being, I would love to go on about my philosophies but I have to get some sleep.
Have a great day.The Gryphon, sky king, Jimmeyjack and 1 other person Thank this.
