    LSagentOZR,

    Couple questions.

For BCOs, if you get a spot market type load and it pays flat fee, do you still break out a FSC or does the BCO just get the his percentage from the flat rate?

OZR - is that your agent code? I have a couple drivers that run out of your area and will tell my dispatcher to keep an eye out for your loads.

I recently spoke with a canadian driver who is on with Landstar and he LOVES them. He has so much good to say I have been thinking since that I may have to look them up. Does anybody know how it works for north south freight? Do they have enough to keep canadian drivers going? And do they have any going into. And out of the East Coast of Canada? And lastly.. Who does their recruting up here? I did a google on Canadian recruting and a Hamilton company was at the top but when I called the number was disconnected.
    Thanks!

    Bill,

It truthfully just varies on the freight and the rate at the time. Most usually, we'll always break it down so the BCO gets a FSC. We feel they deserve it and try our best to take care of them so they'll haul for us when we call and need a hand.

Yes sir, that is our agency code. We also have OZX for Landstar Express America, OZM for Landstar Logistics, and VCV for our West Coast Ranger office. We have offices across the US to help cover our customers in all time zones. I've got two loads posted on the board right now for next week we could really use some help getting covered. Seems no one wants to go up to Ft. Drum. I would've guessed it would be fairly easy to get some good paying military freight back down, but I guess not.

They seem to have quite a bit of in and out freight. As with any company, it varies by time of year. As far as signing on, just call corporate and they'll get you in touch with the right people.

    (800) 862-9256. When the auto-attendant prompts you, say "bco utilization." That'll get you in touch with the right people.

How does it work for an o/o at Landstar as far as insurance and plates? What are their age restrictions on trucks (mine is 2007) can you view a current load board on line to see what loads are there and their pricing? Do they have agents in Canada?

Not sure. Think they cover it but charge you over the course of the year for it. Asking BCO Utilization for sure. Yes and Yes. go to our website and then click lease on as an O/O on the right hand side.

One good thing about LS into Canada is that because many brokers don't understand it they stay away so rates are solid. It is rare a see a rate below $2/mile for approved carriers going into Canada. We will be setting ourselves up to run into Canada next spring as I just go a direct account bringing hay out.

I have not looked at rates out but talked to several past LS BCOs that went independent and still only haul for LS and most of their loads are back and forth. Both say they average better than $2.25/mile with a van. Your rate with LS will be less but so will your expenses and headaches.

Elroy we have quite a few Canadian drivers. No age limit on trucks as long as they pass inspection. You can get Landstar's plate no problem for 1600 a year. They'll pull it out at 100 or so a week. They require you to have Occ/Acc and Unladen liability that meets their standards, which means buying to from them. Physical damage is high priced, so I get mine through OOIDA.
They have quite a bit of inbound Canadian freight, both Eastern and Western. I imagine outbound is hit or miss until you get to know the right agents. They have tons of East Coast Canadian freight all the way up to Newfoundland. They always have loads going up there.
