Hey guys, I'm having a hell of a time trying to memorize and identify what i'm looking at under the hood of these trucks. I've got a video from the school on how to do the pre trip but still can't identify the parts. Anyone know where I can get a diagram?

Does your school require that you point at the exact part? I will just point in the general area of the part when I take my final pre trip text next week. The best way to memorize it (for me) was to create flash cards. That way nothing is in order, I just see the part and memorize what I check it for. Then I go backwards and look at what to check it for and name the part. I also recorded me own voice going over the pre trip but the flash cards are working best for me. I am sure your instructor or another student can show you the parts if you are unsure.

Every state CDL booklet I've seen has what you're looking for. Be careful about the terms pre-trip and other inspections that are required. I suggest you review FMCSR Part 392, Part 396. You can keep looking on-line if you need more than what you have but if it were me I go back to the state manual and check with your instructor.

Illinois has one of the toughest tests due to the problems of "licenses for sale" in past years.
Or so we were told. The hood was never opened during the state exam!

when i took the test for my class b back in 2000 i had to open the hood, last year when i upgraded to a class a i didnt have to open the hood.
i tested both times in west chicago
the only thing i can figure is someone got hurt testing and illinois figured it too much of a liability to have people under the hood , especially since most of the testers in illinois are not qualified to drive a comercial vehicle -
How can you check the steering and other vital components without looking under the hood? I'd like to know what schools are teaching if they say you don't need to look there.

It ain't the school, it's the state. There isn't any thing under the hood that they will ask you. My examiner chewed me out for calling the blueair line the signal line. It's in the Illinois book but I know better than to argue. Ok sir, it's the service line.
