No way I would put up with a sleeper truck that won't idle, find another company.

Well, now's as good of time as any to ask about driving governed trucks and how this could relate to weekly income.
I'll use my own mileage on a recent trip as a model (Tooele, Ut.-Denver, Co.) 567 miles, all with 75mph speed limits except for six short stretches of 65 through construction zones. I obeyed the speed limits religiously (except two downhills where I caught myself at 80mph- immediately hit the Jake and slowed to 75) and made the drive in 8 hours flat, including two quick pee stops. That's an average of 70.875 mph- not bad...

Now let's figure that if I was a company driver I'd be paid maybe .35 per mile, Which means I would have earned $198.45 for eight hours work, or $24.81/ hour. Now let's figure that I was driving a truck governed at 62 mph. The best I could have done under IDEAL conditions would be to make that same trip in 9.15 hours. Figuring that same .35/ mile, I would have earned just $21.69 an hour for the same mileage, a difference of $3.12 an hour. Just for kicks, let's multiply this by 50 hours/straight time. Thats $156.00/ week by my rough calculations, about $624 a month for doing the same job. It's like what the monkey said as he peed on the cash register-"this is gonna run into some real money". Are my calculations correct? Does this make sense? Do guys put up with this?
Granted, this little exercise only applies out here in the West where we can actually drive 75, but grinding away at 64mph all day through wide open nothingness must get kinda frustrating. Do governed drivers earn more per mile? That would seem only fair to me...

...my main point was still the fact that I dont like being an 'impediment' to all the other trucks that are govd 66 mph (many fleets are!) and make them all have to go around me in heavy traffic like I-10 & !-40!! That's why I am apologizing---when you come across one of those 64 mph Knight trucks, and when he pulls off a the truck stop, buy him a cup of coffee!! LOL (he'd rather have a beer, but ya know how it is OTR!) ha ha:biggrin_25525:

I imagine if the cost of diesel keeps rising, your truck may not be the slowest of the bunch.

took them years to creep up from 55 mph when the limits were ALL set to! Since all trucks pay about the same $$$ for diesel (fleets get a 2 cent break at Peelots--we just dumped Loves...must have voided the deal?), and if one looks at the tire-friction (18 wheels) vs. speed, it makes more sense for O/O's & Independents to run slower to save $$$. They are the ones that are going to suffer running 75 mph vs. the govd Nat Carriers!!

Problem is, too many drivers to grind thru ,by those Nat Carriers ,who get tired of the low-govd speeds---only reason those carriers have raised the govd speeds is to attract drivers (with experience!). :biggrin_25513:
