I didn't say anything about the difficulty of military or combat driving. Do this for awhile, you won't be in that truckstop guide all the time, you'll know pretty much what is where in every state you drive. You won't discover the Richmond, VA, to GW corridor, you'll have done it and know what to expect. You learn the country, what's going on where and and what happens at what time of day. Those 12'6" underpasses in NYC, yep, you have to drive your 13'6" combination through them- it's NY, afterall. There is just an advantage to knowing the lay of the land of trucking in America, and that's not saying it's easier or harder than anyplace else. Most definitely, it's easier than most other countries.
Your winter driving experience is invaluable. Now, do it in a 77,000lb, 70' long combination when you aren't free to look out the window and decide it's better to stay inside today. Do it when you aren't just crawling 10 miles to work and back. Do it when you're going down a stretch of road and the whole way is littered with semis on their sides and four wheelers everywhere. It's not the the most difficult thing in the world but it might get you off a thread on a message board defending your starter company. -
I like workin for Roehl... and they are right...the Gary terminal sucks to get anything done there...its always too #### busy for what they have for Mechanics...but it is a nice place to hole up for the night if your in the area...and want to miss out on all the fun Chy town traffic...

OK, but that prepares you for I 85 heading north out of Atlanta at 4pm how?

Thanks for the substantive input (as opposed to the badgering some prefer). Indeed, maybe that guy had no business calling BS on ETCH.
Meltom laid out what is supposedly the policy regarding detention and he didn't say anything about an actual appointment time.
Of course, the company gives me an ETA, and they don't tell me if it's carved in stone or if the FM made it up. Not my fault they are sending me to a drop and hook and don't have empties there. Apparently there are all these loopholes in detention but I no longer have a DRG to verify what they are saying about detention. I can say what I was told, log off duty and you don't get any money.
Lots of hostility on this thread, for sure. I appreciate your civil tone and hope we can continue to talk that way. -
Hey guys...this guy thinks I have never been north out of atlanta during rush hour...

(FYI I live in Jacksonville FL so I go through Atlanta quite a bit...and BTW to confuse you even more I am pretty much moved up to Tomah WI...just in case your wondering) -
Im not hostile...I am just having me some fun...I need a little excitement in my life from time to time...
notezbngrn71 Thanks this. -
Pity, I never got to experience anything but Gary but it surely seemed a lot of this was company wide.
-
Umm maybe because Gary is Located in an Area that is well traveled and easy to get to...Thats why everyone is there all the time...
Appleton is not too bad..but off the beaten path...so is marshfield...I don't know about our Terminal up in Iron Mountain...or any of the ones out west cause I haven't been to them...
Ellenwood leaves alot to be desired though...again its a place to hole up if your short on time and its late enough your not gonna find a decent spot at any of the Truck Stops...
