I'm thinking of putting together a Pete 389 glider instead of buying a new truck.
The truck will see little mileage, but I want to do this right, along with saving a few bucks and retaining resale value...
I would like to use the old style single turbo Cat, possibly on a rolling kit, but I don't know what to look for as far as engine model or electronics.

This company is showing various model Cats, but has a few engines that are ready to go, but are these Acert engines converted to a single turbo, and if so, are they reliable?
I am grateful for any experiences, thoughts and suggestions.
    Thanks.

The shop that's redoing my 3405E has done several conversion on ACCERT engines switching them to single turbo's. They are on Michigan-spec logging equipment hauling up to 150,000 lbs.

The owner told me that it's really worked out quite well.

My son built his own glider in 2005... a 379 with a 600 CAT/18 speed, etc. The engine was a test unit from CAT engineering ... he had to switch a few parts since it was a Freightliner application and re-do the pin connector since the cab was built for a C16 not an E model... but it's been a good truck for him.

As far as the 389 gliders go, you want to start with at least a 2WS E-model. You need to have the ADEM2000 (70 pin) ecm to communicate with the ecu in the dash and function properly. Depending on the year of the glider will determine if the switches are also multiplex. Multiplex switch options are not available with the ADEM2 (40 pin) ecm. A person could always rewire the switches straight to the ecm, but the gauges would also have to be changed back to 379 gauges. If going with the 70 pin ecm's, only real minor rewire is required to make the cab and engine function properly.

    Hey George,

We had a Peterbilt 388 Glider Kit done by Hoover's Truck & Equipment about a month ago. They do great work! Put a CAT C-15 single turbo in it. He also deals with an Licensed CAT dealer nearby called Antrim Diesel. So they can help you out there. Brought it back bobtailing avg. 12MPG! Now I know that's bobtailing but we hope to see good things from it.

    good luck!

Not to dig up an old thread but I have a 09 389 glider specd for an isx, what would I have to do to put a 70 pin cat in it? would it be worth it?
only cause i can find one much easier than an ISX
    thanks
