My brother did that last year, hired as a driver helper and after that he was layoff.Since then they wouldn't hire him back for a reg.job but he apply for a driver helper for this season and he got an interview, not sure as of yet if got the job or not.A lot of people think getting in as a driver helper is your foot in the door but what I have seen its not.

I took a job as a UPS helper one Christmas and absolutely loved it. Pay wasnt great but if you take it and look at how successful UPS is based on the things they do and just try and learn from that then it is worth it. I busted my tail off and the driver I worked with as well one of the managers took note of it. They let me come in one afternoon and use the computer to look at "Internal" UPS job postings and put in good word for me when I did apply. It didnt work out with a full time job but I wouldnt hesitate to do it again if I was unemployed. Talk about friendly shippers and receivers - who doesnt like to see the UPS man? We were always offered everything from sodas & burgers at one receiver who always grilled out on Fridays to a $50 tip for getting a kid's X-mas present to the house on time.

I live in Indiana. They told us all in a group during orientation and even had us write it down on one of the papers we had to sign after we watched some videos.

Funny story that happened today between the driver and me. We had been hustling for several hours and cutting up in between and when it came time to drop me off she smiled real big and said, "You did fantastic again today, now get the hell out!" LOL! She's great...and a hard worker too! UPS drivers earn every penny they make.
